Coxcomb hill has cost the Red Cross 5160,000 in that period. It is near the terminus of Highway 30, the transcontinental highway between New York and Astoria. Army 'Brainwashing' Courses Suspended Washington (U.R) The Air Force disclosed today that it has suspended the controversial "brainwashing" interrogation of students at its prisoner of war survival school in the Nevada desert. The Air Force now wants to determine whether it can give the same indoctrination to its airmen by demonstration tech niques rather than by personally subjecting them to the intensive interrogation. The survival school at Stead Air Force base in Nevada oper ated in relative secrecy until early this fall when hair-raising accounts were published about the training techniques employ ed at the school. Some of the airmen and officers were report ed put through "brainwashing" procedures which would rival those used by the Communists in Korean prison camps. Honduras Delegate To UN Found Dead of Shot Tegucigalpa, Honduras (U.R) Dr. Romeo Aguero, Honduras delegate to the UN General As sembly currently meeting in New York, was found dead Monday with a bullet in his heart. Authorities said it was an ap parent suicide. Aguero had ar rived from New York on leave only Monday morning. No rea sons were given for his appar ent suicide. . At least thafs the way the Christmas season looks up to the Federal Reserve Bank 12 days before the holiday. The FRB says retail sales in the seven western states are running 3 to 4 per cent higher than last year"s rec ord yule season. Salt Lake City stores led the pack with a whopping 15 per cent increase. San Jose, Calif., was up 10 per cent and San Di ego 8 per cent. Other cities reported these in creases: Oakland, Calif., 5 to 6 per cent; San Francisco, 3 to 4 per cent; Seattle and Portland, 4 per cent; Los Angeles County and Spokane, 3 per cent; Tacoma, 1 per cent. Merchants say there's more money around, greater employ ment and just better times. They also say an extra shopping Sat urday will help things along this year. Weather Possible Hitch There is only one possible hitch the weather. Shoppers might be hesitant about ventur ing out in a rainstorm. Even so, two Fresno department stores reported sales 6 per cent higher than last year despite rainy, foggy weather. Another note of caution was sounded by Harry S. Schwartz, Federal Reserve Bank econo mist, who said the buying habits of Christmas shoppers "can fool you." "Sometimes the season starts out like a choo-choo train, then peters out at the end," he said. "Or it can be the other way around." Michael Weill, president of the White House department store in San Francisco, reported sales up about 1 per cent with customers buying better quality goods than in the past. An executive of another large store here said sales were up about 5 per cent, with only heavy home furnishings lagging. North Bend Bank Bid Unaffected by Merger Portland (U.R) The proposed merger of the Coos Bay National Bank and the U.S. National Bank of Portland will have no effect on the Portland bank's ap plication for a branch at North Bend as far as the bank is con cerned, a bank spokesman said today. The bank official said decision on U.S. National's proposal for a branch at North Bend is up to the comptroller of currency in Washington, D.C., but the bank "is not withdrawing its applica tion." Merger papers for the Coos Bay and Portland banks now are in the hands of the comp troller of currency. If the mer ger is approved, stockholders of the two banks have to be given 30 days notice before a vote is taken on the proposal. Boards of directors of the two banks approved the merger dur ing the week end. Grindle, 39, former The Dalles city clerk-treasurer, pleaded guilty in Circuit Court here yes terday afternoon to charges of embezzlement of $2,678 in city funds.
