Iowa Upset By Buffs
As Kentucky Escapes
Another Loss, 71-69
By JOHN GRIFFIN
United ress Sporls Writer
Iowa, Big Ten title favorite
and ranked fourth among- all
the nation's teams, went from
the unbeaten ranks today as the
result of the second biggest up

NCAA tournament, but things
were suppcd to be different
now. And it seemed they were
as Iowa seized a 33-31 halftime
lSd. But Colorado surged to a
54-48 lead midway in the sec
ond half before an Iowa rally
led by Bill Seaberg narrowed
the gap to 57-58 with 26 seconds

Good Future
Seen For PCL
San Francisco (UP.) Direct
ors of the Pacific Coast League
met here yesterday bubbling
with enthusiasm and predictions
of a rosy future for PCL base
ball for the first time in years.
Most of the business was rou
tine. The directors formally in
stalled Leslie O'Connor as
league president after accepting
the resignation of Claire V.
Goodwin.
Jerry Donovan, new president
of the San Francisco Seals was
accepted as a director. Donovan
was named to his new post by
the Boston Red Sox, who re
cently purchased the San Fran
cisco team.
The directors even made an
amiable attempt to prepare a
three-year schedule that would
do away with the practice, of
keeping Seattle, Portland and
the new Vancouver team in Cali
fornia the first three weeks be
cause of the fear of rain.
It was tentatively decided
that the Northern teams would
return to their home parks after
two series in California, thereby
permitting a better adjustment
of schedules all around the
league.
Wollpert Worried
About- East Trip
San Francisco (U.R) Coach
Phil Wollpert saw trouble ahead
today for his University of San
Francisco powerhouse which
starts a crucial swing through
the East this week.
"It's in the percentages that
we might lose," Woolpert said
of the top-ranked Dons who have
won 29 straight since an early
season setback bv UCLA last
year. "But even if we do, we
won't be beaten too soundly and
it won't mean the end of the sea
son for us."
The Dons play Marquette Fri
day night in first round play of
the DePaul tournament in Chi
cago in which that university is
entered along with eighth-ranked
Duquesne.
Woolpert added that "the kids
have no illusions and will be
taking the games one at a time."
After the DePaul tournament,
USF has dates at Wichita, Kans.,
and Loyola of New Orleans be
fore moving into Madison
Square Garden for the Holiday
Festival tourney.
Woolpert said he hasn't been
able to get a scouting report on
Marquette because his middle
western contact had moved and
left no forwarding address.
WHITMAN IN OVERTIME

Boxing Guilds
Meet in New York
New York (U.R) Offic
ials of the New York Boxing
Guild and the International
Guild met in secret session early
today at a midtown hotel to map
battle plans against the New
York State Athletic commis
sion's "Guild ban."
Charley Johnston, president
of the International Guild, was
scheduled to return from San
Francisco before nightfall and
consider whatever plan is evolv
ed. Not since their organization
in 1951 have the New York
guild and the parent internation
al faced such a crisis as the one
resulting from yesterday's an
nouncement by Commission
Chairman Julius Helfand that
the guild was outlawed in New
York State.
At least four possible moves
were being considered today by
guild officials: (1) Order a gen
eral boycott against New York
state and permit their boxers to
fight only in "friendly" states;
(2) Fight the ban openly with
a test case in court; (3) Go un
derground and operate sub rosa
in New York state while osten
sibly accepting the commission's
ban, and (4) junk the current
New York guild and reorganize
as a labor union.
Managers of champions Rocky
Marciano, Archie Moore, SugaTr
Ray robinson, Carmen Basilio
and Sandy Saddler are included
among the 83 members of the
New York organization.

New Pro Coach
Philadelphia (U.R) The
Philadelphia Eagles of the Na
tional Football League began
shopping for a new head coach
today and General Manager

the bargain basement.
McNally, in announcing the
firing of head coach Jim Trimble

to hire a "name" coach from
either college . or professional

Wilkinson of Oklahoma, or Navy
Coach Eddie Erdelatz. Biggie
Munn of Michigan State and
Blanton Collier of Kentucky also
were mentioned.
