An inveterate pipe smoker, he said he would worry about poking "after I've passed 80." 0 14 Known Dead in Alaska Jef Tragedy Fairbanks, Alaska (U.R) Fourteen persons were known dead today in the crash Tuesday "of an Air Force F84F Thunder jet fighterplaneinto an Air Force apartment unit, and Air Force authorities said they be lieved that was the final death toll. Thedead included year-old-triplet sons of an Air Force couple who escaped. Maj. John Orr, public informa tion officer at Eielson Air Force Base 26 miles south of here, Said 13 bodies were recovered from the ruins and that another per son died in the hospital at Ladd Air Force base near Fairbanks. Six persons were in serious oondition. Christmas Saving Club Members In West Divide Record Bonanza Three Persons Die in Air Ambulance Crash Corona, N.M. They were believed to be those of Bill Carpenter, the fun eral home director who operat ed the air ambulance, the body of a child he was taking to Al buquerque for cremation, and an unknown person. Mrs. Carpenter said in Carls bad her husband had left with the child's bo'ciy early today and may have picked up a passenger at a brief stop in Roswell. The child was that of Dr. Sewell Starcke of Carlsbad. San Francisco (U.R) Mem bers of Christmas Savings Clubs in the West divided a record $110,000,000 bonanza this year, club officials reported today. The figure represented nearly a 10 per cent increase over last year and reflected what one bank executive termed an im portant stimulus to the habit of systematic thriftiness. Surprisingly, less than a third of the club savings distributed to members last month was ear marked for Christmas shopping, according to a survey made by the company that started the club plan in 1910. John Boucher, western repre sentative of "Christmas Clubs, A Corporation," said the survey showed that members put an other third of their year-end re turn in permanent savings with the rest going to pay year-end bills such as insurance and taxes. This would indicate that mem bers like the method of saving toward a goal through small, regular deposits despite the fact the interest in most cases is only one percent. Fixed Amount Under the plan, members agree to deposit a fixed amount ranging from 50 cents to $20 every week or every other week for 50 weeks. Interest is paid only on completed accounts, thus providing the incentive to keep up the deposits. Although the Christmas Club plan is nationwide, generally only western banks offer inter est. "They're more aggressive in trying to develop mass banking by the small wage earner," Boucher said. Jtsoucner saia the average check paid to members through the nation this year was $90.40. In the West it was something over $100. Christmas Clubs are not in themselves particularly profit able to the banks because most of the money is withdrawn after 10 months. Call 2-6141 Washington County Vaccine Shots Urged Beaverton (U.R) Washington county resident who have failed to take Salk anti-polio vaccine shots were criticized by the county health officer today when he reported a sharp increase in the county's polio incidence rate. Dr. Carl Tarlowski said many people were putting off the shots in the hope thdt the government would institute a free program. Dr. Tarlowski said "we have been averaging nearly seven new cases a month recently and not one of the county's record num ber of cases has involved-a per son who has received the vac cine. ' The health officer said private physicians had ample supplies of the vaccine and would admin ister shots at small cost. m'tske it festive with iegg og mm the clubs. Louis B. Lundborg, Bank of America vice president for busi ness development, said "equally important is the growing accept ance of this method of saving." "It has developed a habit of thriftiness and underlines the value of systematic preparation for recurring expenditures such as the summer vacation," he said. "Emphasis has not been on the total amount but on the plan." Boucher estimated that 1,100,- 000 persons belonged to Christ mas Clubs in the eight Western states, Hawaii and Alaska this year. California members received S95,500,000, the biggest share of the November payoff. Washing ton State was second with $6, 300,000 followed by Hawaii with $4,300,000. t Other state totals were: Ne vada, $1,800,000; Arizona, $1, 200,000; Oregon, $712,000; Mon tana, $550,000; Idaho, $90,000 and Utah, $26,000. Mathlne Job Not Needed; Cats Wash Themselves Salem (U.R) No one ap parently told the two-year-old daughter of Edwin Armstrong, assistant administrator for Gov. Paul Patterson, that cats wash themselves. . Armstrong said the family cat was still groggy from being put in the washing machine by the little girl, who then -apparently turned on the power. The cat apparently was relatively harmed. un- Short in Electric Drill Fatal to Douglas Man Roseburg (U.R) A 44-year-old Roberts Creek Water District employee apparently was elec trocuted at his home Wednesday, Douglas County Coroner L. ' L. Powers said. The victim was George L. Roberts. He was working at his home when an electric drill he was using shorted out. Roberts is survived by his wife and three children. Excessive Postal Speedup Charged Portland (U.R) Sen. Rich ard Neuberger (D-Ore.), yester day accused the Post Office De partment of "speed-up" tactics against postal employees that were "more than flesh and blood can stand." He demanded an investigation into the Work Performance Standards system of the department. Sen. Neuberger is the only Pa cific coast member of the Sen ate Committee on Post Office and Civil Service. He said "numerous post office workers have described to me the speed-up characteristics of the work performance system. Each speed-up is followed by an other. The senator added, "postal employees are human, and they can produce only so much ef fective work." All elected -officers of the firm took salary cuts of 50 per cent. At all plants closed by the walkout and at all general over head operations, salaries of "cer tain higher management person nel," were reduced 40 per cent. Spokane i(U.R) Spokane bus drivers have threatened to strike at midnight unless they are granted a 21 cent hourly pay raise.
