Perhaps they were told sim ply, "Take this medicine," or wen operate on you tomor row," or "You have von Reck linghausen's disease, or neuro circulatory asthenia, or infec tious mononucleosis, or dissem inated lupus erythematosis." Na turally this - sort of thing left them more frightened and wor ried and up-in-the-air than they were before ' they went to the hospital. So often we physicians hate to stop and spend time . trying to give the patient some idea of what disseminated lupus erythe matosis is. The other day I heard a brother physician trying to help such a patient by telling him that it was a collagen dis ease. You laymen can realize how greately enlightened and satisfied and reassured the pa tient was! My more enlightened medical brethren today are realizing that the man had right to be told that he had a rare and poorly understood disease that some times kills. That "it tends at times to quiet down and then it may flare up badly. Fortu nately, today, many of the pa tients are tided over their flare ups with the help of cortisone. Report To Patient Hoped I hope that gradually, with time, more of us physicians will outgrow the old idea that a doc tor could and should disregard the desire of his patient ,to know what is going on. I hope that some day, after every abdominal operation, the surgeon will give the patient a report of what was found and done! also, a copy of the report of the pathologist, saying what he found on micro scopic examination of the organ or bit of tissue removed. Why do I hope this will be done? Be cause, in just the last two months I have seen a number of women who, a year or two ago, had some , operation per formed. In one case the husband is a prominent attorney, and yet he was unable to learn what was found, and what was done to his wife. Why did I much want to know what was found, and why was the information so important to that woman's -welfare? Broadbent, new chief ranger at Crater Lake National park, arrived at the park Wednesday with his wife Lynn and their sons, Jock, 13, and Tommy, 8. Broadbent, who replaced Car lock Johnson, assumed the du ties of chief ranger yesterday. Broadbent was district ranger for several years in the Elwha district of Olympic National park, Wash., where his duties included operation of winter sports activities at Deer Park. Pilot, Aircraft Cadet Positions Now Open Enlistments for pilot and air craft observer trainees as avia tion cadets in the Air Force are open to qualified applicants be tween 19 and 26Vi years old. Testing and qualifying of avia tion cadets for the two flying training programs was halted for a short time last summer be cause of a temporary surplus of candidates. Those interested may contact the local 'Air Force recruiting station in the post office build ing for additional information- disease. If no cancer was found, then I can give the woman and her husband some hope. Hope to Stop Growth In one case there was a ques tion of a tumor, found and par tially removed, had originated in the ovary or the colon. If it came from the ovary then today there would be much more hope of stopping its growth with radia tion and male hormone than if it came from the colon. In another case, the woman had had a goiter removed, and later much radiation to her neck. She says her doctor refused to tell her anything. Now, when she comes with weird symptoms that suggest the presence of a scattered cancer, I so wish I could learn what type of tumor was removed from the neck. But I cannot find out. If the tumor was a certain type of cancer of the thyroid gland, the woman i might now be helped by, radio active iodine. Often, when an operation has j to be performed on a patient of mine, I find it helpful to draw a little diagram or to reach back of my desk for a book on anat omy in which I can show the patient the part of his body . that has become diseased. I can then give him some idea of how the defect is to be repaired. In many a case I almost cure a patient simply by getting him to see clearly what his problem is. Usually, when he is satisfied that his disease is never going to "turn into anything" or kill him, home he goes, happy and satisfied and reassured. One of the unhappy things we doctors often do is just to grunt when a patient asks, "Will this mangled hand of mine ever be of much use again?" or "Will I be able to walk again, or will I ever be able to go back to my job?" Com monly, we doctors don't answer II It you ask one, you find that city officials get fighting mad and deny that Hawthorne Park is being turned into a real estate sub-division.
