On the afternoon of Sept. 4 lightning began to pop on the uplands of the Klamath Falls and Butte Falls Ranger districts of the Rogue River National for est. In Deaths Reach Eight In Plane Accident North Hollywood (U.R) The death toll in the crash of mil lionaire playboy Joel Thome's private plane into an apartment house has risen to .eight. . Mrs. Laura Marchica, 38, and her sister, Mrs. Anna Presin azano, 41, died at North Holly wood hospital yesterday. Mean while, two more victims of the crash last Monday night re mained on the critical list. Thome's small plane plunged into the roof of a two-story apart ment house shortly after taking off from nearby Lockheed Air Terminal. Negotiations Resume In Phone Dispute Portland (U.R) Negotia tions resumed here today be tween CIO communications workers and reDresentatives of the Pacific Telephone and Tele graph Company. Federal mediators will assist in trying to work out a new agreement covering 5000 em ployees in Oregon. The present contract expired at midnight last night, but was extended bv both parties until Oct. 31. After that date, the contract may be term inated on two days written no tice. The union has asked raises ranging from $3.50 to $6.00 per week. The company calls the de mands "unrealistic and unac ceptable." Rail Enthusiasts Take Salem Trip Portland (UIR) Residents of the Willamette valley got a surprise yesterday when a bright-painted train jammed with passengers rattled down the Oregon Electric line from here to Salem, Ore., for the first time in 22 years. The sportiest cars on the trip were bright yellow interurban equipment vintage of 1910. The trek was snonsored iointlv by the Willamette Valley Elec tric Railway association and Pa cific Northwest Electric Railway association. About 600 railroad enthusi asts from as far away as Van couver, B.C. and Los Angeles, Calif., made the trio "on a line which has been hauling only freight, since 1933. After taking 90 minutes, to get the 27 miles from Portland to Beaverton, and then going on to Linton and Burlington, the Diesel-drawn train headed south over tracks now owned by the SP&S. The train had to go the long way round,' 71.2 miles to Salem, be cause some old Oregon Electric track had been torn up in the Portland area. And then came the strikes, followed by reports of fires and of more fires. They grew worse toward dinner time. The family ate by turns. Fires were added to fires in the Prospect and Butte Falls area and in the Siskiyou and Applegate districts. Every report meant a jump to telephone or transmitter, on a search by wire and air waves for logging crews to join U. S. Forest Service forces in the dis astrously growing fire fronts of the Rogue River National For est. And it was a Labor Day week end! One Weary Week ... So the pressure began, and it was to grow steadily for a week of pure hell on both sides of the Oregon - California line. On through Tuesday the 6th the calls came, one upon another, as appeals for men, tools and machines to be sent to this fire, then to another, were made. Some 50 logging and mill com panies were actively engaged in suppressing fires before Tues day was past. - Time faded for the Simpsons. At their home the laundry wait ed. So did the pears for can ning, and the lawn. Jackson county logging was down for- a week.' So were the mills. More than a thousand' log gers and mill workers were on the 55 fires, beside the protec tion crews, with tractors, tank trucks, pumps and. hpse lines, and the Roxy network goiag, go ing, going, night and day a vital line of cimmunications. "None of the fires got away only 400 acres burned from 55 fires," reported Rogue River National Forest Supervisor, J. H. Wood. "Thanks to the hun dreds of men and dozens of com panies who really put out when the going got rough . . . and to you, to Mrs. Simpson, your staff and the association members."
