(International) Behavior of Children Under Test Pressure Eyed by Pyschologist By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York (U.R) An educa- fenal psychologist has suggest- ed that it is high time educators found out just what tests in the elementary schools do to the forming characters and person alities of the kids. Prof. Arthur R. Delong of Michigan State University made a survey of elementary grade teachers and of observations by professionals of the behavior of kids while under test pressure, and came to these conclusions: Influences Personalities 1. Incessant testing influences the forming characters and per sonalities of children, whether Jhe effect is good or bad, he could not say.- 2. Elementary teachers are so little aware of this that their mass answers to a questionnaire provided no hard-and-fast infor mation. ' "Observers' watching elemen tary school children taking tests have long been aware that the classroom Atmosphere is differ ent during the test period than it is at more usual times," he said in a report published by the National Association for Men tal Health. Some children work with an intensity never otherwise dis played; others do not Work at all but sit twiddling a pencil, gazing occasionally at the teach er awl other classmates. Some youngsters openly, others fur tively, study the test answers on papers near enough to read. Occasionally a child weeps, or a little group breaks into uncon trolled, though smothered, gig gling." " ; No Proof Offered m Prof. Delong found only one discussion of what tests do to elementary kids. That discussion was "brief." It said test-taking had "character - building conse quences of enduring value," but offered no proof. So he sent questionnaires to teachers in elementary schools considered "more progressive" and in other schools considered "more traditional." "On the whole," the resulting informa tion was "unusuable because of the inconsistency and vagueness of answers." Man Drives To Work In 1921 Model T Ford Spencerport, N. Y. A member of the Rochester model-T club, he makes the 150 mile round trip to Cheektowaga at least twice a week. It takes him about 2V4 hours one way. But the slump in the prices paid for live animals is consid erably . greater than the lesser prices paid by housewives for the final product, ' a check of livestock, wholesale, and retail prices in the Chicago markets indicated. Nevertheless, the American Meat Institute said it would is sue a statement later today show ing that retail beef and pork prices are at their, lowest point since World War II price con trols were removed. Record Cattle Year Livestock experts here said this year's record cattle produc tion has helped push down both beef and pork prices. This is be cause housewives generally pre fer to buy beef at the lower prices and pork prices must con sequently be out to attract cus tomers. On the Chicago live animal market today, pork prices aver aged 13 to 14V& cents a pound, as compared with 18 cents a pound' at this time last year. This meant a substantial drop of 434 to 5 cents a pound or 40 per cent. . At the same time, receipts of hogs here last week totaled 1,223,000, 149,000 more head and 26,075,000 more pounds on the hoof than the 1,074,000 in the comparative period last year. On the live cattle market, choice steers averaged about 22 cents a pound, 3 cents or'13V per cent under last year. The price drops were not so marked on the wholesale ' mar ket. Bee,f rounds were down 3Vfc to 4V cents per pound from last year, chucks 4 to 5 cents, prime grade ribs 8 to 9 cents, and eight to 16-pound pork loins 4 to -6 cents. In the meat markets, retail prices were higher than last year for a few of the choicest cuts i. Jthree tenths of one per cent jump' for center cut pork chops and a 1 per cent increase for rib roast. , But most prices for pork on a cent-per-pound ..basis were down 5 to 19 per cent from last year. A check showed a 5 per cent slump for loin roast, 9 per cent for sliced bacon, 10 per cent for whole hams, and 19 per cent for sausage. Housewives with a yen for beef paid 2 per cent less for round steak and hamburger and 9 per cent less for chuck roast. The poultry situation was not so clear, with more eggs on the market but higher prices. Large white eggs sold for 12 cents a dozen more ' than a year ago, standards were up 18 cents, and mediums 7V4 cents.' On the other hand, there were 2 per cent more eggs on the market. A U. S. Department of Agri culture spokesman here said that a rare increase in both hog and cattle production at the same time was forcing down the prices of both products. Portland Food Prices Show Slight Increase During Past Month San Francisco (U.R) The Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that food prices in Portland .'increased slightly be tween mid-August to mid-September while dropping during the same period in Seattle. Average retail prices, at the same time, increased in both San. Francisco and Los Angeles, the bureau reported. Portland's retail ' food prices averaged a slight increase of 0.3 per cent, but with the index of food prices at 110.7, still 1.2 per cent below that of September a year ago. The bureau reported the price rise over the month prevailed 'in all major food cate gories except fruits and vegeta bles, which declined seasonally by 2.9 per cent. Retail Level Down ' In Seattle, declines in prices of fresh fruits and vegetables pushed the general retail price level of foods 0.3 per cent be low the comparable level for August, the bureau reported. The food price index of 111.9 in Seattle was 0.2 per cent above that of September a year ago. Flour was priced higher, as were round steak, salmon, apples, canned orange juice and canned peaches and eggs jumped up 5.4 per cent. In Los Angeles, . the bureau said an increase' of 0.5 per cent in the average of retail prices brought the September level to the highest in 18 months. The increase was fairly general throughout the entire price struc ture, according to the bureau, and lifted the all -items:.. price index to 116.1, or DJJ per cent above that for September, 1954 Food prices between mid-August and mid-September rose by 1.3 per cent. Whifeface Cattle Leads Registration Kansas City, Mo. (U.R) Regis tration of . purebred whitef ace cattle passed the half-million mark this year, more than twice the number of combined regis trations for all other breeds. The American Hereford Asso ciation, with national headquar ters here, said 522,639 purebred animals were registered during the breeding year ended Aug. 31. This total was the third highest on record. The association said the num ber of farms and ranches main taining registered Hereford herds climbed to 80,000 this year, a world's record for any single breed, , Statistics on the ' Hereford breed are compiled in the mod ernistic association headquarters set off by a huge plastic and steel replica of a Hereford bull atop a 90-foot pylon. The figure is illuminated at night. President Eisenhower, in a tribute to the cattle-breeding in dustry dedicated the $1,000,000 structure in October, 1953. In San Francisco, retail prices in September averaged 0.3 per cent higher than in June. The all' items price index of 115.6 was identical with that for March, but 0.5 per cent below September a year ago. Except for the cost of food and personal care; prices generally-were, high er in September than three months earlier, but foods aver aged 0.4 per cent lower than in June.
