uplands of the Klamath Falls
and Butte Falls Ranger districts

in camps, and remote controls
in an office building and the
home of Forester Lewis L. (Doc)
Simpson, executive of the
SOCTFA.
1 Martha Simpson became a li
censed operator, with husband
Lewis. Then son Ferris and
daughter Martha Ruth achieved
licenses. The family and home
were soon known as "Roxy Re
mote" around the big - timber
network. The daily grist of stor
ies that ensued would have kept
a daily serial going, and this on
real-life stories. 4
Now we take up where we
left off, and move on to Mon
day, Labor Day, 1955. Tht
scene opens with Martha fixing
to do her washing, while catch
ing up with her canning, delay
ed by a long, fierce fire season.
She was also at work on a ne
glected lawn. The family help
ed. The phone kept bothering
Martha and Doc at their "holi
day" chores, and - radio calls
came regularly, too. Then the
Weather Bureau phoned warn
ings of "dry lightning." And
then came the strikes, followed
by reports of fires and of more
fires. They grew worse toward
dinner time. The family ate by
turns. Fires were added to fires
in the Prospect and Butte Falls
area and in the Siskiyou and
Applegate districts.
Every report meant a jump
to telephone or transmitter, on
a search by wire and air waves
for logging crews to join U. S.
Forest Service forces in the dis
astrously growing fire fronts of
the Rogue River National For
est. And it was a Labor Day
week end!
One Weary Week ...
So the pressure began, and it
was to grow steadily for a week
of pure hell on both sides of the
Oregon - California line. On
through Tuesday the 6th the
calls came, one upon another,
as appeals for men, tools and
machines to be sent to this fire,
then to another, were made.
Some 50 logging and mill com
panies were actively engaged in
suppressing fires before Tues
day was past. -
Time faded for the Simpsons.
At their home the laundry wait
ed. So did the pears for can
ning, and the lawn.
Jackson county logging was
down for- a week.' So were the
mills. More than a thousand' log
gers and mill workers were on
the 55 fires, beside the protec
tion crews, with tractors, tank
trucks, pumps and. hpse lines,
and the Roxy network goiag, go
ing, going, night and day a
vital line of cimmunications.
"None of the fires got away
only 400 acres burned from
55 fires," reported Rogue River
National Forest Supervisor, J.
H. Wood. "Thanks to the hun
dreds of men and dozens of com
panies who really put out when
the going got rough . . . and to
you, to Mrs. Simpson, your staff
and the association members."
This was reward enough for
all the folks of "Roxy."

Illegal Mexicans
Found Near Klamath
Klamath Fails (U.R) Four
U.S. border patrol agents from
Blaine, Wash., rounded up 11
illegal Mexican immigrants in
southern Oregon and northern
California during the week end.
The agents said four of the
men were picked up at Tulelake,
Calif., and seven at Bonanza,
Ore., where they were working
in the potato harvest
Local officials said it was the
smallest roundup of "wetbacks"
in recent years. Two years ago,
some 400 Mexicans were round
ed up in the Klamath Falls area.
