Infection in Conversation Do you remember, by any chance, the conclusions reached by Medical Research1 Council from a study of the hypothetical "common cold" made in Eng land, over a period of several years? It Included experiments on human volunteers under care fully controlled conditions. Com pared to this British investiga tion the annual "scientific" ex peditions launched in Yankee land, with the "promise" of find ing the nature, cause, and cure of the trouble which every wise acre understands but no physi cian or health authority can de fine, seem farcical. One. conclusion of the British investigation, made on the field and not in the headlines, is that ordinary ''exposure" to cold, damp, draft, change of weather, such as everyone experiences in everyday life, has nothing to do with susceptibility to or immun ity to the cri. I do not wish to imply that the British used the term cri (kree), but in my book let this word expresses what they mean, namely, the Common Re spiratory infections, that is, any of the indispositions, or illnesses (usually communicable) which stupes and stinkers call "colds." Title of the booklet is Call It .CRI. For your copy send 25c and stamped, self-addressed enve lope. From the letters of readers it would seem that my teachings concerning the cri hurt the feel ings of some people and arouse indignation in others. Probably none of these poor geeks will believe me, but I'm sorry for anyone who imagines there is any harm in everyday "expo sure." In my philosophy it is bad enough to have to endure cold, dampness, insufficient clothing, insufficient heat, chilliness, wet feet and the like, without worry ing about the possibility of de veloping pneumonia, rheumatiz, influenza, measles or poliomy elitis too. These miserable crea tures are as unhappy as the old hermit who complained that his life had been a constant succes sion of misfortunes, although most of them had never hap pened. No old fossil worries more about the effects of "exposure" to cold or wet than I do about the consequences of proximity to an ignoramus or a so-and-so who is coming down with or just getting over an alleged "cold," with samples of which he or she is sneezing, coughing, laughing, talking or otherwise spraying the environment. There you have something to resent but prob ably you don't, because you don't know enough about drop let infection to resent it. You don't acquire knowledge of droplet or spray infection in school. Medical and health au thorities generally confine their advice to "cover coughs and sneezes" and say nothing at all about the most common mode of infection, conversation spray. You just take whatever the ignoramus or stinker who ap proaches within five feet of you to talk with you happens to have, and, like a good idiot, blame it on the bad weather. Even an idjot feels annoyed when someone coughs or sneezes in - his face. Cough or sneeze spray carries 10 to 12 feet. Con versation spray carries not over five feet. The virus or germs of disease are as likely to be car ried in the impalpable and in visibly fine droplets as they are in the visible droplets you feel striking your face. Vitamin C and Anemia I was anemic for 10 years and couldn't be cured, although I went to many clinics and doctors. My sister told me about your recommendation of vitamin C. I started taking 200 mg. of ascorbic acid daily, and for the first time in years my blood count went up and stayed there as long as I took lots of vitamin C and fresh fruit juice. Now I can get by with out liver shots. When I told my doc tor he just laughed at me. but my skin has lost that "grey" look . . . (A. T. C.) Answer Probably two or three 100 mg. tablets of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) daily ' andor a glass of fresh fruit juice or the fresh fruit from which it is expressed contributes to the cure of the Gray Sickness Nutri tional Deficiency Anemia send stamped, self -addressed envelope for pamphlet.
