Yreka The recently - ap pointed Yreka water committee held its first meeting this week, and called for a series of re ports from city officials on var ious aspects of the city's acute water shortage and how it can be alleviated. State Sen. Randolph Collier was elected chairman of the group. The committee went on record as favoring a city council plan to attempt placing an under ground dam across a subter ranean waterway near the city's north well to increase the supply of water for the well. The underground dam is ex pected to be only a temporary help, and the committee will study other proposed long-range solutions. Among the reports it asked are those giving the city's financial position, its bonding Valley View Road Detour Completed Ashland The Valley View road east from Highway 99 near Jockson Hot springs, which has been closed for a week, was re opened this week. A new bridge is to be con structed over Bear Creek there, and a temporary detour was completed Wednesday. Births LEWIS To Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Lewis, Orr dr.. Two Car Thefls Reported to Police The theft of two cars, one from a residence and the other from a hotel parking lot, was re ported to the city police yester day and this morning, according to department records. Charles G. Green, 1006 South Oakdale st., notified the depart ment that his 1955-model car had been taken from his resi dence, driven approximately 100 miles, and then returned, police said. Police were contacted early this morning by John Claiborne Greer, Eugene salesman, who stated that his 1955-model sta tionwagon had been taken from 1he parking lot of the Jackson hotel, located at Ninth and Front sts., police said. The car was found abandoned on East Main st., between Cottage st. and Portland ave., police added. It was stolen between the hours of 6 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., they said. OPENS TODAY Prineville U.R) The 1955 Crooked River Roundup opened today with a number of the na tion's top cowboys on hand to compete for a share of the S5. 100 prize money. The rodeo will close Sunday. Days Creek Forest Blaze Under Control Roseburg (U.R) A forest fire which threatened about 1,000,000 feet of felled and bucked timber 45 miles southeast of here was in the mop-up stage today. Wayne Miller, dispatcher for the Douglas Forest Protective association, said the blaze was "controlled and trenched" early yesterday afternoon. It burned over about 45 acres in the Days Creek area. Some 50 firefighters were used to bring the flames under con trol, a job made extremely diffi cult by the steep terrain and the bucked timber. McKAT TO SPEAK Salem (U.R) Interior Secre tary Douglas McKay is scheduled to fly to Gallup, N. M. Saturday night to speak at annual Indian ceremonies there. McKay will speak Saturday afternoon at dedication of a national monu ment at Vancouver, Wash. WOTrriED or DEATH Sheriff's officers here were notified at noon yesterday of tha death of George S. Andrus in an auto accident near Alturas. Calif. The officers relayed the message to Andru's brother-in-law, Wayne Downing, Prospect. Russian Tourists To Visit Satellites Moscow . (U.R) Russia's new "sweetness and light" attitude spread to tourists today and the first two groups of travelers were scheduled to leave for abroad in a few days. The groups, one from Moscow and the other from Leningrad, will visit Poland for 10 days.
