Savage Wins Over Mims Salt' Lake City (U.R) Fistic fame, which for years had fled Salt Lake prize fighter Milo Savage, arrived suddenly but not unexpectedly last night for the Utahn, who pounded out a unanimous 10-round decision over Holly Mims of Washington, D. C, the world's number two middleweight. The victory before 3000 par tisan hometown fans practically assured the 28-year-old Utah fighter a shot at other top ranked boxers in the scrambled middleweight class. The upset win also came in the form of sweet revenge for Savage, who was making the initial appearance of his career before Salt Lake fight fans. Pre viously Savage dropped an un popular split decision to Mims last winter in New York in the celebrated bout in which Savage used boxing's old "shoe lace" trick against Mims. No Trickery In last night's battle Savage used no trickery and there was no question as to the outcome of the fight as Savage stayed on top of Mims throughout the slugfest to gain the victory nod from all three judges. The United Press score card gave Savage five rounds, Mims three and two even. OUT-FEATURES THEM ALL! All-Stars Are 12-Point Underdogs Against Browns Chicago (U.R) The 1955 College All Stars, coached by professional tutors for the first time, were 12 points underdogs today for tonight's 22nd annual battle with the National Foot ball League champions, this year the Cleveland Browns. A crowd of 75,000 was ex pected for the Soldier Field spectacle with a gross gate, in cluding television and radio re ceipts, of about $400,000, equal ling the 1954 record. The All Stars were prepared for the scrap by Curly Lambeau, former Green Bay Packer, Chi cago Cardinal and Washington Redskin Coach, with assistance from Steve Owen, one-time New York Giants coach; Hunk An derson, once with the Chicago Bears, and Hampton Poole, for mer coach of the Los Angeles Rams. Swiich To Pro Coaches In the past, the collegians were trained by college coaches, but the sponsors switched to the professional staff this season after four straight defeats by the pros by one-sided margins. The collegians have won. six games, the last in 1950 with a 17-7 triumph over Philadelphia, while the pro's have 13 triumphs with two games tied. The pro's were the favorites this year chiefly because the Browns, champions of the All American Conference for each year of its existence, will bring into the game the same experi enced personnel which carried to the league crown last year, with only one exception. Quarterback Otto Graham re tired during the winter and will be replaced tonight by George Patterman, who saw only in cidental service last year, but who averaged 8.77 yards gained with each of his passes. Squads Ease Up After Scrimmage Portland (U.R) Rival coaches said today that competition for starting positions on State and City teams for the 8th annual Shriners' all-star football v game Aug. 20 is "extremely keen." Both coaches Lee Gustafon of State and Tom DeSylvia of city said every starting position was still "wide open. The two 24-man squads- eased up today after an all-out scrim mage yesterday. DeSylvia said he planned a game-type scrim mage again Saturday. Gustafson said three guards, Doug Minthorn of Pendleton, Larry Newsom of South Salem and Glenn Evins of Vale were temporarily out with injuries and that Minthorn, who has a twisted knee, is a doubtful starter. Olson, Martinez Taper Off for Non-Title Bout Portland (U.R) Middlweight Champ Bobo Olson and Jimmy Martinez tapered off today after rugged workouts yesterday pre paring for their Saturday night non-title fight at Multnomah sta dium. Olson, making his first appear ance since losing to light-heavyweight King Archie Moore, is a top-heavy favorite but Martinez is in a good position for an upset.
