hits as the Portland Beavers de
feated the Stars 3-0 here last
night.
The Stars copped the series,
however, 4-2.
Waibel faced only 30 batters
in earning his shutout, which
brought his record to nine wins
and six losses. He struck out
nine Stars.
Hollywood starter Ben Wade
struck out 11 Beavers and yield
ed eight of the 10 Portland hits
during his seven innings on the
mound. He was replaced by

Blanks Stars
Portland was not able to
score until the seventh, when
Wade walked Wally Westlake
with the bases loaded. Singles
by Jimmy Robertson and
Frankie Austin and an inten
tional walk to Artie Wilson fill
ed the basis.
Portland picked up two un
earned runs in the eighth as a
result of Curt Roberts' error at
second. Roberts bobbled Wai
bel's grounder with two out,
letting one run score. Wilson
singled as the next man up to
drive in the other.
San Francisco blanked Seat
tle, 2-0, on Dave Melton's two-
run homer in the eighth inning,
In other series closers, Oak
land pounded out a 13-hit, 10-3
win over third place San Diego
and Sacramento staved off a
ninth inning rally to down Los
Angeles, 6-5.
Melton's homer off Ewell
Blackwell last night gave the
last place Seals the series, four
games to one.
Tony Ponce blanked the Rain-
iers until the ninth inning when,
with one out, Bill Glynn dou
bled and Joe Ginsberg singled.
Ponce was replaced by Don
Fracchia who got Bob Balena to
hit into a double play ending
the game.
Oakland helped Al Gettel
notch his 12th win and capture
the series, 4-1. Gettel allowed
seven hits, including home runs
by Dick Sisler and Ray Jablon
ski accounting for all the Padre
runs.
Los Angeles was trailing 6-1
going into the bottom of the
ninth but closed to within one
run of the Sacs on a walk, a
wild pitch, Piper Davis' double,
an error and Jim Fanning's
pinch homer with Ed Winceniak
aboard. '
The Solons scored three runs
in the third inning on homers
by Ed Mierkowicz and Dan
Baich. Mierkowicz's solo blast
was off starter Hy Cohen who
took the loss. Baich led Sacra
mento's 13-hit attack with three
singles in addition to his four
bagger. THE LINESCORES

Salem Beats
Spokane In
NWL Contest
By UNITED PRESS
Last night was Jack Steinagel
night once again in the North
west League.
The Salem socker bombed
two homers and drove in five
runs as Salem swamped Spokane
11-2 to move to within three
games of league-leading Eugene.
Bill Wortham picked up his
seventh victory against eight
defeats as he scattered six hits.
However, Salem wasn't the
only team to gain on Eugene.
Wenatchee closed the gap to two
games with a 10-5 decision over
the Emeralds.
An error with the bases loaded
allowed one Wenatchee run to
cross in the first inning and Joe
Rossi piled it on with a three
run triple. Rossi scored on a
single by Phil Marvier.
Art Preston, Eugene, homered
in the fifth with one aboard and
Chuck Lundgren of Wenatchee
homered in the eighth also with
one man on.
Wenatchee hurler Gene Hay
den notched his 13th decision of
the year against eight losses.
Yakima stopped Tri-City 9-3
with the help of four Tri-City
errors. The Bears got six runs
in the fifths on three hits, three
walks and two Tri-City errors.
Tom Perez of the Braves hit a
solo homer in the fourth and
Danny Holdeh of the Tri-City
club homered in the sixth with
the bases empty.
Babe Zaharias
Not Thinking of
Golf Tourneys
Galveston, Tex. U.R) Babe
Didrickson Zaharias was in good
spirits today, confident she'll get
well, but "not thinking" about
any more golf tournaments.
The famous woman athlete is

of a rectal cancer. She spends
most of her hours watching tele
vision and visiting with her hus
band, former wrestler George
Zaharias.
"I'm not thinking about golf
right now," she said. "I'm just
worried about getting well."

Savage Wins
Over Mims
Salt' Lake City (U.R) Fistic
fame, which for years had
fled Salt Lake prize fighter
Milo Savage, arrived suddenly
but not unexpectedly last night
for the Utahn, who pounded out
a unanimous 10-round decision
over Holly Mims of Washington,
D. C, the world's number two
middleweight.
The victory before 3000 par
tisan hometown fans practically
assured the 28-year-old Utah
fighter a shot at other top
ranked boxers in the scrambled
middleweight class.
The upset win also came in
the form of sweet revenge for
Savage, who was making the
initial appearance of his career
before Salt Lake fight fans. Pre
viously Savage dropped an un
popular split decision to Mims
last winter in New York in the
celebrated bout in which Savage
used boxing's old "shoe lace"
trick against Mims.
No Trickery
In last night's battle Savage
used no trickery and there was
no question as to the outcome of
the fight as Savage stayed on
top of Mims throughout the
slugfest to gain the victory nod
from all three judges. The United
Press score card gave Savage
five rounds, Mims three and two
even.

All-Stars Are 12-Point
Underdogs Against Browns
Chicago (U.R) The 1955
College All Stars, coached by
professional tutors for the first
time, were 12 points underdogs
today for tonight's 22nd annual
battle with the National Foot
ball League champions, this
year the Cleveland Browns.
A crowd of 75,000 was ex
pected for the Soldier Field
spectacle with a gross gate, in
cluding television and radio re
ceipts, of about $400,000, equal
ling the 1954 record.
The All Stars were prepared
for the scrap by Curly Lambeau,
former Green Bay Packer, Chi
cago Cardinal and Washington
Redskin Coach, with assistance
from Steve Owen, one-time New
York Giants coach; Hunk An
derson, once with the Chicago
Bears, and Hampton Poole, for
mer coach of the Los Angeles
Rams.
Swiich To Pro Coaches
In the past, the collegians
were trained by college coaches,
but the sponsors switched to the
professional staff this season
after four straight defeats by
the pros by one-sided margins.
The collegians have won. six
games, the last in 1950 with a
17-7 triumph over Philadelphia,
while the pro's have 13 triumphs
with two games tied.
The pro's were the favorites
this year chiefly because the
Browns, champions of the All
American Conference for each
year of its existence, will bring
into the game the same experi
enced personnel which carried to
the league crown last year,
with only one exception.
Quarterback Otto Graham re
tired during the winter and will
be replaced tonight by George
Patterman, who saw only in
cidental service last year, but
who averaged 8.77 yards gained
with each of his passes.
Squads Ease
Up
After
Scrimmage
Portland (U.R) Rival coaches
said today that competition for
starting positions on State and
City teams for the 8th annual
Shriners' all-star football v game
Aug. 20 is "extremely keen."
Both coaches Lee Gustafon of
State and Tom DeSylvia of city
said every starting position was
still "wide open.
The two 24-man squads- eased
up today after an all-out scrim
mage yesterday. DeSylvia said
he planned a game-type scrim
mage again Saturday.
Gustafson said three guards,
Doug Minthorn of Pendleton,
Larry Newsom of South Salem
and Glenn Evins of Vale were
temporarily out with injuries
and that Minthorn, who has a
twisted knee, is a doubtful
starter.
Olson, Martinez
Taper Off for
Non-Title Bout
Portland (U.R) Middlweight
Champ Bobo Olson and Jimmy
Martinez tapered off today after
rugged workouts yesterday pre
paring for their Saturday night
non-title fight at Multnomah sta
dium. Olson, making his first appear
ance since losing to light-heavyweight
King Archie Moore, is a
top-heavy favorite but Martinez
is in a good position for an upset.
A large crowd turned out yes
terday at the New Haven hotel
gym to watch Olson knock about
his sparring mates.

Rattermari will have the same
targets that Graham used, main
ly ends Dante Lavelli and Pete
Brewster. Other receivers could
be Dub Jones, Ray Renfro, Ken
Konz and John Petitbon, all
standout halfbacks.
In addition, the Browns
boasted fullback Maurice Bassett
fifth leading ground gainer in
the National League last year,
and an experienced line both
for offense and defense.
All Star Lineup
Against this combination,
Lambeau was expected to start
fullback Alan Ameche of Wis
consin, quarterback Ralph
Guglielmi of Notre Dame, and
halfbacks Dick Moegle of Rice
and Dave Middleton of Auburn.
The starting All Star line was
to include ends Max Boydston of
Oklahoma and Jim Temp of
Wisconsin, tackles Frank Var
richione of Notre Dame and
Rosey Grier of Penn State,
guards Tom Bettis of Purdue
and Larry Morris of Georgia
Tech and center Dick Szyman
ski of Notre Dame.
However, Grier, Bettis, Morris,-
Temp and Middleton were
expected to switch to defense
once the game begins to put
more effective offensive players
into action. Probably L.G. Du
pre of Rice will replace Middle
ton at halfback.
