He's still an ac tive balloonist and plans to make at least eight ascensions this uSmer. He's a former trapeze performer and has parachuted fopay about 500 times. "The "Flying Saucer" is some thing that has kicked around in th back of Hartman's mind since 1907. That year Hartman had a bal loon entered in an air show at Stt. Louis but the fellow who sailed away with the $10,000 first prize was a 15-year-old Oliioan identified as Cromwell Dixon. "Dixon flew a circle with his bailoon, guiding it with flappers connected to bicycle pedals," Hartman said. "It was one of the neatest J tricks I've ever seen." Hartman has used Dixon's principle to construct his bicycle balloon. He's ready for the maid enr.flight, needing only a spon sor. The Civil Aeronautics Ad ministration has given its ap proval. The elderly daredevil esti mated it will cost $400 to take the contraption up. "That's why I can't give any demonstration," he said. "But when I'm lined up to give a show, I'll take her anyplace. H. Stafrin, 61, Myrtle Point, Ore., fired eight bullets at her husband and daughter here yes' terday and then shot herself, according to city police. ' The daughter, Mrs. Charles Bristol, Walla Walla, had three bullets in her chest and Mrs. Stafrin had two shots in her chest. Both women were in critical condition. Stafrin suf fered a flesh wound in his shoul der. Police said Staftrin was pre- paring to take his stepdaughter to work when the shooting oc curred. Mrs. Stafrin withdrew the gun from a bag, gripped it with both hands and began fir ing away.
