3 EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) Nixon Beats Yankees, Dodgers Break Losing By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer They're calling Willard Nixon the New York Yankees' No. 1 nemesis today but they'd be more accurate if they called the Boston Red Sox' 27-year-old right-hander, "Mr. Clutch" and let it go at that. For the big sinker-bailer is shaping up as the key pitcher of the torrid American League race because of his uncanny ability to beat the other first division 5 teams. Nixon's fine 12-5 overall record is enhanced by the fact that he has a composite showing of 10-3 against the other four contenders and owns 10 of the 23 wins the Red Sox have scored against the Yankees, Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers. Nixon turned in a neat six hitter to beat the Yankees, 4-1, before a crowd of 61,673 at Yan- kee Stadium Tuesday night. It marked the fourth time in five tries this year that he beat the Yankees and gave him a brilliant two-year record of eight victories and two losses against them. The "Yankee Killer" It's no surprise that Nixon has earned a reputation as a "Yan liee killer" but that's only part of the story. He's also beaten the first-place White Sox and fifth- place Tigers three times each. In the last 14 days he's beaten the White Sox twice and the Tigers once in addition to Tuesday night's triumps over the Yan kees. ' New York's loss, combined with victories by the White Sox and Indians, dropped the Yan kees into third place only a half game ahead of the Red Sox. The Red Sox trail the White Sox by a game-and-a-half and Cleveland by one game. Billy Pierce pitched a two hitter as the White Sox snapped a four game losing streak and held onto first place with a 4-1 victory over the Kansas City Athletics. Pierce, who won his eighth game, had a one-hitter until the ninth when Bill Wilson homered. The White Sox wrapped it up with a three-run second-inning rally in which Pierce singled home a run and Minnie Minoso delivered a two run triple. Singles In Tarn Match Chicago OJ.R) Eight singles matches between top Am erican and foreign golf stars were on tap for Tarn O'Shant er's "International Cup Match" today with the home team hold ing a 2Vi to 1V4 edge after four team battles. In the opening four scraps, with two man teams playing al ternate shots, the Americans came up with two victories and a half, while British Open cham pion Peter Thomson of Austra lia and teammate Angel Guitier- rez of Spain turned in the only foreign victory, 3 and 2 over PGA champion Doug Ford, Ut- ica, N.Y., and Leo Biagetti, Will oughby, Ohio. American Wins The American wins went to Jimmy Demaret, Kiamesha Lake, N.Y., and Fred Haas, Claremont, Calif., 6 and 4 over Rudy Hor Ovath of Canada, and Antonio Cerda of Argentina; and to Ted Kroll, Utica, N.Y., and Tony Holguin, Chicago, 5 and 4 over Ken Nagle, Australia, and Rob ert De Vicenzo, Argentina and Mexico City. The fourth match ended even as Jay Hebert, Woodmere, L.I., and Bo Wininger, Oklahoma City, Okla., came from behind to win two of the last six holes and finish square with Stan Leonard, Canada, and Yoshiro Hayashi, Japan. - Today's singles battles will match Biagetti vs Nagle, Win inger vs Cerda, Kroll vs. Hay ashi, De Vicenzo vs. Ford, Gut ierrez vs Haas, Thomson vs Hol guin, Demaret vs Leonard and Hebert vs Horvath.
