EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON)
Nixon Beats Yankees,
Dodgers Break Losing
By FRED DOWN
United Press Sports Writer
They're calling Willard Nixon
the New York Yankees' No. 1
nemesis today but they'd be
more accurate if they called the
Boston Red Sox' 27-year-old
right-hander, "Mr. Clutch" and
let it go at that.
For the big sinker-bailer is
shaping up as the key pitcher of
the torrid American League race
because of his uncanny ability to
beat the other first division
5 teams. Nixon's fine 12-5 overall
record is enhanced by the fact
that he has a composite showing
of 10-3 against the other four
contenders and owns 10 of the
23 wins the Red Sox have scored
against the Yankees, Chicago
White Sox and Detroit Tigers.
Nixon turned in a neat six
hitter to beat the Yankees, 4-1,
before a crowd of 61,673 at Yan-
kee Stadium Tuesday night. It
marked the fourth time in five
tries this year that he beat the
Yankees and gave him a brilliant
two-year record of eight victories
and two losses against them.
The "Yankee Killer"
It's no surprise that Nixon has
earned a reputation as a "Yan
liee killer" but that's only part
of the story. He's also beaten the
first-place White Sox and fifth-
place Tigers three times each. In
the last 14 days he's beaten the
White Sox twice and the Tigers
once in addition to Tuesday
night's triumps over the Yan
kees. '
New York's loss, combined
with victories by the White Sox
and Indians, dropped the Yan
kees into third place only a half
game ahead of the Red Sox. The
Red Sox trail the White Sox by
a game-and-a-half and Cleveland
by one game.
Billy Pierce pitched a two
hitter as the White Sox snapped
a four game losing streak and
held onto first place with a 4-1
victory over the Kansas City
Athletics. Pierce, who won his
eighth game, had a one-hitter
until the ninth when Bill Wilson
homered. The White Sox
wrapped it up with a three-run
second-inning rally in which
Pierce singled home a run and
Minnie Minoso delivered a two
run triple.
