Farewell Party Honors Woman; Family Leaves Mrs. Melva Chew and daugh ters, Belva, Evalyn and Linda, left last Thursday for Denver, Colo., where the family will live in the future. A fourth daugh ter, Melva, has remained in Mcd ford and is making her home for the present with ht-r grand mother, Mrs. Melva Ethel Chew, 440 JJorth Grape street. A farewell party was given in honor of Mrs. Chew at the home of Mrs. Elsa Walker, 129 North Oakdale avenue, with Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Carl Pearson as hostesses. Many members of Royal Neighbors of America and other friends of Mrs. Chew were pres ent and Mrs. Chew was pre sented a going-away gift. Sister Here Mrs. J. E. Wclin. Puente. You'll want to order every design in it! cneily Group Attends National Session In Los Angeles Dr. and Mrs. W. W. Howard and Dr. and Mrs. J. S. Heather ington have returned home after attending the annual national convention of osteopathic phy sicians and surgeons held in Los Angeles. The sessions opened July 17 and closed July 23. En route home Dr. and Mrs. Howard visited friends in Pasa dena, San Jose and San Mateo, Calif., arriving home Monday night. Dr and Mrs. Heathering ton traveled south early and preceding the convention visited Mrs. Heatherington's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Greene and daughter in Long Beach. Also attendiing the convention were Dr. and Mrs. G. A. Dier dorff, who were accompanied by their three children, Todd, Larry and Gay. They are ex pected home tonight after hav ing visited Mrs. Dierdorff's par ents in Santa Barbara, and a sister and brother-in-law in Bur bank, Calif. The three women attended the national auxiliary convention as delegates of the local auxiliary. Amaranth Holds Picnic at Lake Thirty-six members of Roxy Ann court, Order of the Amar anth, together with their famil ies and guests, attended a picnic at Diamond Lake Sunday, Mrs. George Rehart, royal matron, reports. The picnic was held at the cabin of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Schulze, Klamath Falls, past grand royal patron and assistant grand lecturer, respectively. Six additional courts partici pated including Mirror court, Bend; Emerald court, Eugene; Friendship court, Klamath Falls; Douglas court, Roseburg and Willamette court, Eugene. Also represented were Ionic court, Portland, Honey Lake court, Su sanville, Calif., and Rockridge court, Oakland, Calif. Boating, swimming and games were enjoyed. There were approximately 150 present and plans for another picnic next year were discussed informally. It was the concensus that there would be a much larg er attendance at future gatherings. Dave Brai nerds Visits in City Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fhu Brainerd, Valley View drive, Sunday were Mr. Brainerd's mother, Mrs. Phil Brainerd Sr., Grants Pass, and his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Brainerd and two daugh ters, Lynn and Jan, Petaluma, Calif. The Dave Brainerds, who for merly lived here, will leave to day for their home after a few days in the valley. While here they were guests of Mrs. Brain erd's mother, Mrs. E. A. (International) Family Gathers To Observe Couple's 55th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Childreth, 2920 Cummings road, who have lived in Medford since 1901, ob served their 55th wedding anni versary at a family dinner Sun day. It was held at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Brewold, Jack sonville highway. Present for the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Irish, Med ford, son-in-law and daughter of the couple, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Childreth and Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam Childreth. Medford, and Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Childreth, Gladstone, Ore., sons and daughters-in-law. The Childreths were married July 26, 1900, in Mt. Grove, Mo., and came to Oregon the follow ing year. Both are members of First Baptist church here. Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Childreth left Monday after having visited here with members of Mr. Child ren's family. Mr. Childreth is with the United States Depart ment of the Interior in Portland. Food Prices Shown Higher in Portland San Francisco (U.R) Food costs in major cities on the West Coast showed slight declines dur ing June with the exception of Portland where housewives paid about 0.5 per cent more than the previous month. The Department of Labor re ported San Francisco food ex pense to families of moderate income was down 0.3 per cent and in Los Angeles about 0.1 per cent compared to May. Seat tle showed a 0.2 per cent decline. The San Francisco Bay Area registered the biggest single drop in cost of living expenses with the consumers index standing at 115.3, down 0.3 per cent from March costs. It was 1.3 per cent below the same index for June, 1954. Items showing the biggest drops included transportation and reading and recreation. Portland's increase in food costs was registered highest in the meats, poultry and fish items, with prices for pork chops and ham in the lead. Wednesday, July 27, 1955 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Guilty Plea Entered In Hood River Case Hood River (U.R) D o s s Matchen, who was indicted by a grand jury here July 19 for manslaughter, pleaded guilty to the charge here yesterday. He was indicted after he sign ed a statement July 13 admitt ing he had kicked 48-year-old Robert Easley in the side dur ing a fight in a box car at Hood River July 9. Easley died the next afternoon. Circuit Judge Malcom Wilkin son ordered a pre-sentence in vestigation by the State Board of Parole and Probation. Malheur Without Health Department Ontario (U.R) Malheur coun ty is temporarily without a pub lic health department. Public health nurse Edna Ser ris yesterday announced her res ignation effective July 31. The county court completed the shut down by taking the unit cleark off the payroll and boxing de partment equipment for storage in the county shop until a new nurse is obtained. Nurse Serries said she was tired of the "uphill battle" to ob tain funds for the department from the county court. SNOW IN ARGENTINA Buenos Aires (U.R) Wide areas in southern Argentina were buried under three feet of snow Tuesday and today. Portland Juvenile Burglary Ring Broken Portland (U.R) Police said today a series of burglaries which involved loss and dam age of property worth thou sands of dollars in recent weeks had been cleared up with ques tioning of five juveniles aged 8 to 15, including two girls. Detective Sgt. George Hempe said the break came when De tective Vernon Tiiden stopped a juvenile for questioning Mon day night and the juvenile ad mitted breaking into a refrig erator car. Detectives said the youth implicated four others and that after questioning the group admitted breaking into a num ber of places. The juveniles were being held for further investigation. Picnic Announced By Thursday Club Phoenix Phoenix Thursday club has planned a family picnic for the July meeting. It will be held Thursday, July 28. at 6:30 p.m., in the Phoenix Commun ity hall.
