Man's Confession In Child Slaying Is Repudiated Jnnlin. Mo. (U.FD Joplin police gave a convicted sex criminal a lull nigni s rest De fore questioning him today about his repudiation of a "con fession that he raped and killed little Donna Sue Davis. Detective Capt. Johnny Show ers said he told Audrey Earl Brandt, 42, to "sleep on it" after the suspect suddenly changed his ghastly story and claimed all he knew about the crime was what he heard on the radio. "The whole thing sounds a little mixed up to me," Showers said. Known Sex Deviate Showers, who has led ques tioning of Brandt since his ar rest Wednesday as a suspect in the slaying of the 21-month-old girl in a cornfield near Sioux City, la., said he would attempt to determine whether Brandt learned details of the slaying from broadcasts. JJrandt, an itinerant farm hand of La Porte City, la., is a known sex deviate. Radical Turn-about Brandt's new stand was a radical turn-about from his earlier confession, which au thorities said tallied on seven of 10 major points in the crime, But officials admitted they had doubts about the confession. "He also confessed to any crime we asked him about,' Showers said. Brandt was ar rested as a suspect in a murder after a truck driver with whom he hitched a ride reported to po lice that he "acted suspiciously." After 20 hours of question ing, Brandt confessed.
