HELD IN SLAYING Audrey
Earl Brandt, held by Joplin,
Mo., authorities in the brutal
slaying of two-year-old Donna
Sue Davis of Sioux City, la.
Police say he has confessed.
Man's Confession
In Child Slaying
Is Repudiated
Jnnlin. Mo. (U.FD Joplin
police gave a convicted sex
criminal a lull nigni s rest De
fore questioning him today
about his repudiation of a "con
fession that he raped and killed
little Donna Sue Davis.
Detective Capt. Johnny Show
ers said he told Audrey Earl
Brandt, 42, to "sleep on it" after
the suspect suddenly changed
his ghastly story and claimed
all he knew about the crime was
what he heard on the radio.
"The whole thing sounds a
little mixed up to me," Showers
said.
Known Sex Deviate
Showers, who has led ques
tioning of Brandt since his ar
rest Wednesday as a suspect in
the slaying of the 21-month-old
girl in a cornfield near Sioux
City, la., said he would attempt
to determine whether Brandt
learned details of the slaying
from broadcasts.
JJrandt, an itinerant farm
hand of La Porte City, la., is a
known sex deviate.
Radical Turn-about
Brandt's new stand was a
radical turn-about from his
earlier confession, which au
thorities said tallied on seven of
10 major points in the crime,
But officials admitted they had
doubts about the confession.
"He also confessed to any
crime we asked him about,'
Showers said. Brandt was ar
rested as a suspect in a murder
after a truck driver with whom
he hitched a ride reported to po
lice that he "acted suspiciously."
After 20 hours of question
ing, Brandt confessed. He was
arraigned on a technical charge
cf vagrancy and bound over for
formal hearing on Saturday. His
bond was set at $75.
Convicted in 1947
Joplin police checked with
Iowa authorities and - found
Brandt was convicted' of sex
molestation at Cedar Rapids in
1947. He was arrested in Water
loo, la., last April for annoying
two small girls in a movie
house. "
Federal authorities have been
asked to check Brandt's finger
prints against those found in
Donna's bedroom.
Need for participation of Ki-
wanians themselves in the found
ation to make it successful was
stressed in talks by trustees,
particularly by Boyd Budge,
i president of the foundation. He
described the articles of incor
poration, the by laws and a
brochure as "tools" of .the cor
poration. Dwight Houghton, foundation
treasurer, who has been chair
man of the club's underprivil
eged children's committee, told
, of the financial set up and policy
of the foundation, an organiza
tion of "permanent and solid"
nature to carry Kiwanis pro
jects. He said that it is planned
to spend only the income from
investments of the principal for
the program of charitable and
educational assistance.
Legal Aspects ' .
John Dellenback, president of
the club and vice-president of
the foundation, outlined aspects
and mentioned the tax exempt
characteristic of the organiza
tion. Robert Voegtly, chairman
of the committee which designed
the foundation, outlined its de
velopment, and E. Ron Rice told
how the idea was developed
from a clinic at the 1952 inter
national convention. He attend
ed the clinic. Rice mentioned
that the Medford foundation is
patterned after the Indianapolis,
Ind., plan.
