The admitted ex-Communist, Bruce Hannon, now a 'Reno, Nev., motel operator, also said he "testified falsely and untruth fully" under party orders when he appeared on behalf of Bridges at a deportation hearing in 1939. Hannon was the seventh wit ness to take the -stand against Bridges in the government's at tempt to prove that Bridges was a Communist and thus clear the way for revocation of his natural ized citizenship. The government hopes to deport the fiery water front labor leader to his native Australia. Personal Health Service By WILLIAM BRADY, M.D. Rcaderi should address inquiries to: Dr. William Brad7 263 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif. IT'S COMFORTING TO KNOW 1 Thanks to your writings and especially Little Lesson No. 5, writes an Iowan, no member of my family has had a cold in the past three years. Having studied Little Lesson No. 5 an intelligent person must realize that it is stupid to call any ailment a' "cold." What would you think of a teacher, nurse or doctor who looked at Johnny's throat, pro nounced it "just a cold" and told Johnny to remain in school, if your Gerald or Geraldine, in Johnny's class, presently came down with measles, meningitis, infantile paralysis or diphtheria? Wisconsin sexagenarian with the ideas At a nonagenarian says a recent article in this column, in which I tried to insure read ers that chills, wet feet, drafts, etc., have nothing to do with susceptibility to the cri (kree, common respiratory infections) was "the same old ballyhoo. You invite physicians to challenge you about this. Why should they? You are helping their business." Why don't I let my hair down (if I have any) and give in and admit I'm stubborn? How about one-third or more of the people who are 60 percenters and haven't the resistance that sol diers, sailors, explorers, hunters, fishermen, forest rangers and other vigorous young men have? And so on, yakety-yak. Having needled me cruelly the man parries the blow I was ready to deliver by adding that ' we have been reading your articles for 15 years or more. We hope you live forever and keep on writing. Use my name if you want to." I don't like soft soap. Mister I don't really hanker after any kind of soap. So I beg to re mind you that nobody has proved scientifically that ordi nary "exposure", to wet feet, drafts, chills, insufficient cloth ing, sudden change of weather or environment or dampness causes or predisposes to illness. I didn't invite physicians to challenge me. I merely promised to print the . statement of any physician who desires to refute what I say about "resistance." I say no physician can define "resistance" or show that there is such a state, apart from im munity. It would be so silly to imagine or imply that wet feet, drafts, etc. have any effect on any im munity one happens to have against a specific disease, that the lamebrains have to conjure up something elusive and intan gible to yakety-yak about, and "lowered resistance" suits the requirement. There are circumstances un der which it should be comfort ing to know that, short of frost bite or freezing, exposure to cold and wet is harmless. 16,000 Idled by Wildcat Strikes Detroit (U.R) Wildcat strikes at General Motors and Chrysler Corp. plants idled al most 16,000 workers Saturday. Some 8,500 GM workers re mained off their jobs at the Wil low. Run transmission plant as a wild meeting of 500 members of CIO United Auto Workers Lo cal, 735 ended in disorder Fri day night after a vote to con tinue the walkout. The strike began Wednesday when a handful of tool sharpen ers protested the three - year contract reached between GM and the union June 13. They de manded an eight cent hourly pay boost which was given to skilled workers instead of the six cent increase they received. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Piles What can be done for internal thrombosed hemorrhoid (pile) short of surgery? We never miss your col umn . . . (R. W. S.) Answer Thrombosed means clotted clotting is the way nature cures piles if you have the fortitude to endure the pain and disability long enough. I'd prefer ambulant (injection) treatment if I were the patient. Send stamped, self-addressed envelope and ask in writing, signed, for pamphlet YOU NEED NOT HAVE PILES. Notice how nice the old geezer is about it no sugegstion of stupidity! I wish a few thousand readers would miss this column when it doesn't appear and let the publishers know about it. Can Scarcely Believe It For years I had so much phlegm in my throat ... no doctor ever sug gested a remedy that helped read in your column about B deficiency, and by the time I had finished one bottle of B-nutron tablets . . . can scarcely believe the improvement ... (Mrs. H. W. L.l Answer Neither can I. but anyway the B tablets can do no harm. Inside View of Pyorrhea Treatment Appreciate your articles on pyor rhea . . . worked in the office of a dentist who specialized in that field. In twelve years is seemed to me that treatment was of no avail . . . (R.M.) Answer So-called pyorrhea is not a disease but physical degeneration in my opinion. But in Little Lesson No. 1. SAVE YOUR TEETH, for which send 25c and stamped, self-addressed envelope, I give a fair view of what recognized authorities say about it. (Protected 195S by John F. Dille Co.)
