A frank movie version of a daring Broad way hit, "I Am a Camera" ap peared headed toward bypass ing American censors today. So far the distributors of the controver sial English film have not applied to Hol lywood's John ston office for Aline Mosby a seal of ap proval. But a spokesman for the movie-makers predicted they w ould copy another talked-about picture, "The Moon Is Blue," and book the film into U.S. theaters minus a production code seal. "The Moon Is Blue" was a fluf fy bit about a girl who kept say ing "no." But the more frank and dramatic "I Am a Camera"' tells of a girl who kept saying "yes." Julie Harris portrays the- girl from a respectable English fam ily who runs away to lead a Bo hemian life in Berlin before World War II. She is so eager to find love she even imagines she is going to have a child. The dialogue among Miss Har ris, Laurence Harvey, and Shel ley Winters features her "af fairs," mistaken pregnancy and a possible abortion. But both producer James Woolf and actor Harvey, here from London on business, point ed out today the picture was iiade "on an adult level with taste and integrity." . . - - -. "We wanted to stick to the original theme," Harvey explain ed. "Why does a film producer buy a play if he's not going to film the original story? He might as well buy a different work." A spokesman for the distrib utors in New York said, "The screen comes of age with this adult picture." , "We are determined in fair ness to the authors and the pub lic, who have been insulted by watered down versions, of liter ary properties, to show the pic ture as the original artists want it done," the spokesman said. Top Authorship The play was written by framed writer-director John Van Druten, based on stories by an other top author, Christopher Isherwood. Although a sneak preview of the film here caused a wave of amazed talk around Hollywood, Harvey said the script was more daring before the English cen sors cut it. The English censor board gave the film an "X" for adults only rating. The picture also was passed by the New York censors. "The English censor approved it provided the film was made with taste and that the sex could not be played up in a cheap and vulgar way," Harvey said "Many things had to be cut out of the story." ' Some members of the press who saw the film agreed it was "tasteful and artistic" and pre dicted an Oscar nomination for Julie Harris. As We Live By ELIZABETH HURLOCK, PH.D. SON AND WIFE DROP IN TOR DINNER TO SAVE Young people are sometimes thoughtless, but if they mean well it is foolish to take offense. (Q) "We have a son who .was married last cummer. Since then he has invited us just once to his home. He comes once every two weeks for dinner, without being ask ed. He and his wife come is just before the dinner is to be served, so I have to prepare the food without any help. I think they are imposing on me because they are on a strict budget. Do you think I am wrong in expecting them to invite us to their home once in a while? I would like to know what to tell them with out hurting their feelings. I would like to go out on Sun days myself. Before our son was married he lived . away from home and we saw him only occasionally." , (A) Even if . your son and daughter-in-law do come to see you primarily to save on their budget, you should be glad to have them and you should make them welcome. k it would be per fectly all right to suggest that they let you Tr"?itfcii., know ahead of Dr. Hurlock time when they are coming so you will have ample food ready. If you suggest that you would enjoy coming to see them some evening, I am sure they will in vite you. They have doubtless hesitated to ask you because they thought you would expect to be invited for a. meal and this would be hard on their budget. When you do go to see them, tell them ahead of time that you would like to bring a cake or cookies so that they will not feel that your coming would mean extra expense. And, since sum- t - lw iv . I VVS feel 1 I I thin lr 1 I mer is a good time for picnics, why not suggest that you have a picnic together some Sunday, with you taking the food? Young people who are inex perienced in housekeeping may not realize that dropping in for a meal with parents can be very inconvenient. They may not real ize, either, that you would en joy getting out of. the house and visiting in their home. They are, like most young couples, primarily interested in themselves and their own affairs. Therefore, if you want to keep up this new relationship that has developed since your son's marriage, you do not want to do anything to offend them. (Copyright, 1955, General Features Corp.)
