Comment On By HARMAN UiM Pram Washington (U.R) What does the driver of the year do on his day off? He takes his family tor a spin. At least that's what Floyd J. Pem berton of De troit does. He's driver of the year winner of the Ameri can Trucking Associati o n ' s coveted award. . "After a long ride," Herman Nichols Floyd said, "It's nice to get out of the cab of a heavy truck and take Bonnie, my wife, and Floyd Jr., he's 13, Harold, who's 11, and baby Mike for a whirl around Redford Township (in the Detroit area). They all like to ride, too." The curly haired Floyd, sen ior, is half an inch shy of six feet and weighs 185 pounds. He is slim, and trim and you wouldn't want to trade swats with him in an alley. "Truck drivers aren't really so tough," he told me. "But they have to be when the occasion de mands. Commonly we try to be as polite in tne lunch stops as we are on the road. If a man keeps his nose clean he doesn't have to get up his dukes." Former Marine Floyd, for sure, could get up his knuckles if the occasion de Visftw wetaaw A4 This and That W. Pemberton has an almost per fect driving record with the Com mercial Carriers, Inc., a Detroit haulaway company. Away he went for half a million miles in nine years and only had one mi nor scrape. And that wasn't his fault. Some clown bumped into the back of his truck and knick ed it a little. The damage was only $65 and it didn't come out of our lad's take home. He became a hero when he saved two ladies. Hardly any body knew about the incident until a couple of weeks later when Floyd submitted a routine report. He had, it turned out, witnessed an accident in which a car caught fire. He grabbed his fire extinguished, doused the flames and gave first aid to the victims and then called help to get the women to a hospital.
