I95S Perjury Trial of Left-Wing Labor Leader Has Flareup San Francisco (U.R) The perjury trial of left- wing labor leader Hugh Bryson wai punctu ated with flareups Friday as Federal Judge William C. Mathei of Loi Angeles bickered with at torney! for both sides. Bryson, former president of the defunct National Marine Cooks and Stewards Union, Is charged with falsely stating in a Taft-Hartley law affidavit that he was not a Communist, or was not affiliated with the group. Asked for Mistrial Mathes first clashed with at torneys for Bryson, who asked for a mistrial because they wer being "harrassed and threaten ed" by the court. The judge de nied the motion, cutting off at torney George R. Andrews's lengthy arguments before they were completed. The angry Andreson quickly asked that the record show "I did not conclude my statements because1 of the threatening tone of the court." Counsel Under Fir The government counsel, Rob ert Schnacke, came under fire when the c6urt ordered him to complete a search of records in Washington to verify Bryson's shipping papers during 1936 and 1937 before restating the govern ment case. Schnacke protested such an in vestigation would be lengthy and it "might mean the government could not rest for two or three weeks." Maths drily observed, "If it is going to take two or three weeks, I'll entertain a motion to miss for want of prosecutio.. and with that he recessed me eourt for the week end. GRANGE Shady Cove Grange Shady Cove Grange will meet May 11 at 8 p.m. in the Shady Cove School gymnasium. Grangers are aspect to bring a picture of their mothers. Shady Cove GEC ladies will be the guest of Mrs. Cecil Kee n May ID at 1 pm. Roll call will be answered with a short poem. Eagle Point Grange Eagle Point Grange H.E.C. met April . 27 at the home of Carol Clymer with Rosa Smith at, co-hostess. Mrs. Edith Poe, district and Pomona H.E.C. chairman was guest of the day. Preceeding the meeting a pro gram of organ music by Carol Clymer and group singing, led .by Marie Hayes, was enjoyed by all. " Fancy: Work chairman, Rosa Smith, reported two finished dish towels and two sets of pil low cases were turned in to that committee. a Mrs. Edith Poe told of the dif ferent contests open to women and young folks of the Grange and that the sewing contest en tries should be turned in during May as these have to go to the State Grange convention to be held in June, but that the can ning contest entries need not be in until the last of October. She also suggested a visitation pro gram such as the one being car ried on in the Grange, be started for the H.E.C. It was reported that Gladys Ragsdale was home and recover ing nicely from a recent opera tion. Everyone enjoyed seeing Rosa Smith and Goldy Chamber lain back to club again after re cent illnesses. Next H.E.C. meeting will be on May 25 at Ruby Stowell's with Opal Waddell as co-hostess. 4-H Clubliews Applegate Club The Applegate Sewing Susans met at the home of Karen New man, May 4, called to order by the . president, Betty Neilsen. Karen Newman led the club in the flag salute. , Our leader gave a demonstra tion on how to make a garden in a jar. These are called ter rariums We are all going to make one and exhibit them at our .county fair. Our club had visiting day May 7. We visited the Antelope Sewing club and had dinner with them.
