Perjury Trial of
Left-Wing Labor
Leader Has Flareup
San Francisco (U.R) The
perjury trial of left- wing labor
leader Hugh Bryson wai punctu
ated with flareups Friday as
Federal Judge William C. Mathei
of Loi Angeles bickered with at
torney! for both sides.
Bryson, former president of
the defunct National Marine
Cooks and Stewards Union, Is
charged with falsely stating in a
Taft-Hartley law affidavit that
he was not a Communist, or was
not affiliated with the group.
Asked for Mistrial
Mathes first clashed with at
torneys for Bryson, who asked
for a mistrial because they wer
being "harrassed and threaten
ed" by the court. The judge de
nied the motion, cutting off at
torney George R. Andrews's
lengthy arguments before they
were completed.
The angry Andreson quickly
asked that the record show "I
did not conclude my statements
because1 of the threatening tone
of the court."
Counsel Under Fir
The government counsel, Rob
ert Schnacke, came under fire
when the c6urt ordered him to
complete a search of records in
Washington to verify Bryson's
shipping papers during 1936 and
1937 before restating the govern
ment case.
Schnacke protested such an in
vestigation would be lengthy and
it "might mean the government
could not rest for two or three
weeks."
Maths drily observed, "If it is
going to take two or three weeks,
I'll entertain a motion to
miss for want of prosecutio..
and with that he recessed me
eourt for the week end.
