S W LlVG ,r n-IZACTH HURLOCK, fH.ft I Dr Hexlock Graciousnass Needn't Signify Insincerity There is a common belief that if you are kind and gracious to all people, it will be interpreted as a form of insin c e r i t y . You hear a lot. about people at e p jmw wno are au I, f I things to all Sr I . men." The im plication often is that any gra cious person is insincere. Some peo ple, unquestionably, are kind and gracious to everyone for per sonal gain. They want something from all people, if nothing more than their respect and admira tion. ' Others, by contrast, are kind and gracious with no selfish motive. They act as they do be cause they like people and be cause they feel that it is the right way to bf.have. Looking at the matter from an objective point of view, I am sure you will agree that this makes sense. Why should any one feel that he has the right to take out his personal annoyances en an innocent victim? If you are annoyed by something, is it ... good sportsmanship to be gram py to people who are in no way responsible for your annoyance? Then there are the people who are different from you be cause they have less money or have had fewer advantages in life. And there are those who have a different religion or skin color, or different beliefs. Does this mean that they are inferior to you just because they are dif ferent? Belief Will Be Translated - If you take time to analyze the problem, I am sure you will agree that there is no reason to be anything but kind and grac lous to the people you come in contact with in your daily life, whether they be members of jour family, your neighbors, your friends, or, your associates in work. Should you. be willing to ac cept this point of view, your be lief will then be translated into action. You will find yourself being gracious to everyone, not because you have some personal gain in mind but because you want to treat them in that way. This is the sincere type of graci ousness that no one can mistake for a selfish motive. LETTERS FROM READERS Worry: "Can worry wear a person out? My husband wor ries so much and he is always ' complaining of being tired. Is this she cause?" (A) Worry certainly can sap a person's energy. A person who worries is playing havoc with the different organs of his body and is using up energy that should be spent for better pur poses. In time he depletes his reserve store of energy, with the result that he is Just as tired when he gets up in the morning as he is at night Not all cases of constant tiredness come from worry, however. But he is always out of monsy before the end of the week. Should we advance him some from his next allowance?" (A) It is never wise to encour age living beyond one's means, as advancing money from the next week's allowance will do. Instead, go over your son's ex penditures vith him and try to find out where he has been using his money foolishly. Then see if you are expecting him to buy more with his money than his allowance will justify. If so, he will need a larger allowance, not advances on the next one. Gifts to Wife: "Before we were married, my husband used to give me flowers and very nice gifts. Now all I get are gifts on special occasions." . (A) Before you were married, your husband may have had more money to spend for gifts than he has now. If you have reason to believe that he could afford flowers and gifts now as he did before you were married, you during your courtship days, you might . tactfully mention how much such things meant to (Copyright 1955.
