(International) Jj&y S " f c 'r- -, t ' yy v-3 C 'I I II 1 1 I ' 1 Biologist Says Leukemia Battle Takes New Turn San Francisco (U.R) A California biologist said today medicine's fight against the deadly blood cancer, leukemia, has swung in a startling new direction, possibly making all previous attacks on the disease obsolete. Overproduction of white cor puscles has long been thought to be the cause of leukemia, but Dr. Howard Bierman of the City of Hope hospital in - Durate, Calif., said his research shows it is just a symptom. , Indication of Condition He said it is possible that leu kemia is really a heretofore un known disease and that exces sive white cells is an indica tion of the condition. Bierman, addressing the Fed eration of American Societies for Experimental Biology, said he arrived at his new conclu sion after three years work with i . i i a new drug caiiea myieran. The drug, he said is able to destroy "granulocytic" white blood cells, a type found in a common form of leukemia. How ever, it leaves other types of cells strictly alone, Bierman said. Cells Destroyed Using the new drug, Bierman and his associates were able to destroy all the cells which were previously supposed to cause the cancer. Nevertheless the patients died. Bierman said that though the patients had no excess white cells, examination after death showed all other symtoms com mon to the disease, indicating they were killed by something unknown. Research indicates, Bierman said, that scientists should look I for failure by some part of the body to eliminate normally white blood cells, rather than a function gone -wild in over production. Under normal conditions, the white cells are produced in bone , marrow and are destroyed in such tissues as the spleen, liver, the lymph nodes. Bierman said that autopsies have shown that these organs in leukemia victims have been swollen to uselessness by white cells. These findings will possibly change all previous concepts of leukemia research, Bierman said. (U.R) Te hama county fruit and almond growers voted last night to in vestigate possible emergency loans to farmers ' as a result of last week's severe freeze. The growers voted to see if the Farmers Home Administra tion could call the county an emergency area and set up an emergency loan system. A spokesman for the group said the final decision on loans would rest with the Secretary of Agriculture. It was disclosed at the meet ing that the freeze cost growers 40 to 50 per cent of the prune crop, 40 per cent of the peach crop and 25 per cent of the al mond crop.
