Exploring Chiropodist Takes Off for Unknown Portions of Central America Chicago (U.R) Dr. Harold Emiley is off for the jungle again. Emiley, a chiropodist by trade, sets out with his party tonight for portions of the Central American wilderness never be' fore visited by white men. Such trips are Emiley's hob by, or perhaps his ruling pas sion. This is his 10th expedition. He has made eight trips to the Canadian wilderness and last year he visited Guatemala, j Novices Go Along ' Each trip, he takes a group of novices along, volunteers who've never been on such an outing before. This year he's making the trip with 11 recruits who are forsaking their humdrum lives for a 22 day adventure into the wilderness; They'll drive to New Orleans and fly to southeastern Mexico. From there they'll go by truck through jungle trails to Belize, in British Honduras, and then by pack mule across Guatemala. Every Possible Hazard : "There'll be every possible hazard," he said. "Wild tigers, leopards, the works." Nevertheless, Emiley Says any average person could make such a trip, and he doesn't under stand why more of them don't. "There's nothing so strenuous about it,'' he said. "And it's a lot more satisfying than holing up in some fancy resort at $45 a day, knocking yourself out trying to have -a good time." Emiley was bitten by the ex ploring bug as a youngster. "I never ran away from home when I was a kid, never hopped a freight and never even owned a jalopy," he said. "But I read about Columbus and Marco Polo, and travel became my secret passion.'' - He said he ; decided to "do something about it" before he . wound up in a wheelchair. A Great Adventure : "Exploring virgin country,' getting away from civilization, there's nothing to top .it," he said. "You climb a hill and look at a scene no white man has set eyes on before. And you : don't stumble over a pop bottle or a half-melted ice cream cone." Most of Emiley's companions are people from ordinary walks of life who have heard him lecture on his : travels before Rotary Clubs and the like. "I guess my enthusiasm in fects them," he said. "And when 1 tell them the trip costs only $400, less than lots of Florida vacations, they're really sold." Aftej" a resort vacation, he said, "you suffer a letdown." "But after a trip into the jungle, you appreciate the lux uries of your own home. Civil ization is a new experience," he said. Chicken Pox Cases Increased in HepafitisSaid Down The number of cases of chick en pox reported in Jacks o n county so far in 1955 is more than three times the : number listed by this time last year, according to figures compiled by the county health depart ment. , - Sixty four cases, most of them in Medford and Talent, were reported in the county last week, bringing the total for the month to 95 and the total for 1955 to 147. Only 48 cases had been reported up to this time. last year, and. the. total for ,1954 was Cases of chicken pox listed last week included 26 in Talent, 25 in Medford, 11 in Phoenix, and one each in Eagle Point and Ashland. Infectious Hepatitis Down Two cases, of infectious hepa titis, including one each in Pros pect and Eagle Point, were re ported in the county last week, bringing the total for the year to eight, compared with 22 at this time last year. A total of 73 cases of the disease were re ported in Jackson county dur ing 1954. . Six other types of communic able diseases were reported in Jackson county last week. They included influenza, nine cases; measles, seven cases; scarlet fever, three cases; .pneumonia, three cases; strep throat, two cases, and german measles, case. one 'Grand Old Man' Of Oregon Succumbs The Dalles (U.R) Edward C. Pease, 94-year-old merchant, known as one of the "grand old men" of Oregon, died here Sun day. "She'd rather have me go off on these jaunts than adopt the common vices, horses, liquor, women and the like.' 1955 Nash Autos To Go On Display Here Tomorrow An entirely new Nash auto mobile model series will go on display tomorrow at Surroz Nash, Fifth and Bartlett sts., in Medford, it was announced to day. The new model series has been developed to accommodate extensive changes in Nash Am bassador and Statesman pas senger cars for 1955. The Ambassador V-8 series, featuring a new V-8 engine de veloping 208 horsepower as standard equipment, will top the 1955 Nash line. . The new Nash line includes super and custom four-door and custom Country Club hardtop models in the Ambassador V-8, Ambassa dor Six and Statesman series. Changes Listed Changes in design and per formance characteristics are in cluded in the Ambassador and Statesman series, which retain previous Nash features such as deep coil ride. Airliner reclining seats and Twin Travel bed, com bined air conditioning and heat ing system and others. The new instrument panel in the Ambassador and Statesman series has been designed to com plement the new wrap-around windshield, which Nash calls the widest in the industry. On custom models, the upper surface of the center portion of the panel is covered with" a plastic foam crash pad covered in simulated leather grain, with colors' to match the instrument panel. McMinnville (U.R) Yamhill County health authorities have announced a 50 per cent increase in hepatitis incidence in the county during the past year. General Electric Scientists Find Secret of Making Diamonds By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor ' Schenectady, N.Y. (U.R) Men are making diamonds. Up to now only nature has made them. General Electric has opened its scientific research laborato ries to display diamond-making by its ' scientists who started from scratch and duplicated na ture's hardest most cherished material. . They were not imitation dia monds, said Dr.; C. Guy Suits, vice-president, and director of reasearch. Nor were they mere ly like diamonds. They were diamonds precisely identical with the diamonds made by nature. General Electric Excited The discovery of the "how-to", of diamond making, which many scientists had believed was a secret of nature man might never unlock, . seemed to have vast GE in a tizzy. After all, the company's primary business is manufacturing electric equip ment. Dr. Suits wouldn't deny the obvious implications . which were: 1. If a man can make dia monds at all, he surely can learn to make diamonds which are as flawless, beautiful and big as any made by nature. ' 2. If the laboratory cost of the first man made industrial dia monds is only twice the market selling price of nature made in dustrial diamonds, the eventual cost of man made diamonds will be drastically lower. Can Be Used Industrially All he would say was that "any conclusion we are about to make diamonds of a size and quality suitable for gem use is decidedly premature. -"On the other hand, if the present high cost of making dia monds by the G-E processes can be reduced, the primary appli cation of man-made diamonds will probably be in industrial tools for cutting and polishing." GE's discovery of the dia mond, "how-to" began with a routine investigation four years ago by Drs. Francis P. Bundy, H. Tracy Hall, Herbert M. Strong, and Robert Wentorf. The chemical ingredients of the diamond are well, known. Chemically diamonds are iden tical to graphite and charcoal. But somehow nature managed to crystalize these ingredients into the hardest and most beau tiful substance contained in the earth. Two Methods Developed The GE "team" of scientists developed two techniques for making diamonds. Dr. Bundy subjected a compound of car bons to a pressure 800,000 pounds to the square inch, which is about 53,500 times the pressure of the atmosphere at sea level, for hours. He used the laboratory's 1000-ton press. That made the compound a solid and the core of this solid was so very hard it would scratch anything. Definitely it was a diamond. Dr. Hall took over from there. He designed a chamber, which he called the "belt" in which a pressure of more than 111, mil lion pounds to the square inch and a temperature of more than 5000 degrees (fahrenheit) could be maintained. ' The "carbon aceous . compound" solidified in this chamber, in minutes, and the solid yielded diamonds not in ones or two but in clusters. The man-made diamonds passed every test of the dia mond. Nothing can scratch them except another diamond but they can scratch a nature-made diamond. X-rays act In their crystals just as they act in the? crystal of nature-made dia monds, and this is considered the ultimate test.
