February 16, 1955 Repp By rt on Annexation Council at March 1 The Medford city council last night ordered a report be made at the March 1. council meeting on the proposed, annexation to the city of the Wilson tract, south of Stewart ave. near Ham ilton 8t. , .About 42 houses are planned there, Slaven Brothers Construc tion company, Eugene, will build them, and paved streets, sewers and water mains are planned. Ask Commitment The firm asked the council for a commitment on ; annexa tion before it begins street and main construction. It is the coun cil's .policy that such improve ments be made before annex ation. The council is unable to make a ' commitment , without holding a public hearing, the company was told. In other . business, the coun cil extended the lease for the temporary eastside fire station, at 147 South Keen Way dr. for another year. Rental is $75 a month. Ned R. Liebman, a for mer resident, owns the property. A public hearing was set for the next regular meeting on paving of East Jackson st. from Lindley ave. to Berkeley Way. A total of 60.3 per cent of the property owners involved have petitioned for the improvement. Adopts Petition Rule The council also adopted a rule limiting submission of pav ing petitions for work to be done In the summer of the same year. April 1 was set as the deadline. The action was taken because it takes about 60 days to process the petitions and make engineer ing studies before letting the contracts, usually about June 1. City Manager Robert Duff re ported that bids have been ad vertised for the sale of the for mer eastside fire station site at Ruhl Way and Valley View dr. They will be opened on Feb. 28. The council approved con struction of a well at the Camp White sewage plant for domes tic water supply and for opera tion of the plant. The well will cost about $500. The alternative was reconstructing 10,000 feet of four-inch main from White City at a cost of $25,000. The main, built cn a temporary basis, is not satisfactory, he added. The council will consider at its next meeting a petition by George Goodman to put in curbs and gutters on Ninth st., west from Central ave. to the alley, Air Scouts Visit CAP Squadron Here At Airport Meeting The Medford squadron of Civil Air patrol had 12 Boy Scouts as visitors at their regu lar Monday night meeting. , ;. -. The Scouts, members of Squadron 14, Air Explorer Scouts, led by Harry Taylor, ad visor, and Leon (Punk) McDou gall, assistant advisor, are inter ested in aviation and are in the air phase of their scout work. The group was shown through the building, into the class rooms, radio room, and saw the various training aids and watch ed a training film. The Scouts were shown through the Link trainer by CAP senior member Harry Lawrence. The group was invited to re turn in the near future and.it is hoped that additional training aids will be available. CAP training films and an air travel film . of South America were shown by TSgt. W. S. Kistner, liaison airman, 9091st Air Reserve group of Medford. Expert Sought To Study Signature Milwaukee, Wis. (U.R) A civil suit involving a promis sory note came to a standstill in court yesterday until an ex pert could be found to study the signature on the letter. Gong Hong presented the note for $5Q0 which he claims Yep Lee owes him. . It was signed in Chinese hand- brush characters. Ordered Meeting with oversize driveways. .The council also authorized purchase of a right-of-way on Columbus ave. from Dakota ave. to Murray st.; prohibiting park ing on the north side of Main st. for a 40-foot distance between the intersection with Sixth st. to the crosswalk on Newtown st.; allowed , two-hour parking on a trial basis on North Ivy st. between Sixth, and , Main sts.; allowed three driveways in ex cess of standard width for a serv ice station at 12th st. and River side ave.; called for a hearing on vacation of a portion of Ham ilton st. between Mt. Pitt and Stewart aves., and approved a Class A liquor license transfer to the new owners of Bud and Lucille's restaurant. The police and traffic commit tee recommended that a request by KMED for a parking meter "gimmick," to be used from 9 to 10 a.m. during the spring opening, be denied. The council adjourned until 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 23, when high school students will participte in city government in the annual Elks-sponsored Stu dent Government day. Sewage Dangers Will Be Talked i The problem of improper sewage disposal, in fringe areas of Jackson county will be dis cussed tomorrow at ' a meeting of the Jackson County Public Health association, Mrs. Chester Guches, association president, reminded residents today. Scheduled to take part in the discussion are Robert Hart, county sanitarian; Dr.- A. , E, Merkel, county health officer; Vernon Thorpe .chairman of the health association sanitation study committee. Also on the agenda for the meeting will be a report' on the chest x-ray program which is designed to find early cases of tuberculosis and lung cancer, The meeting will be held at St. Mark's Guild hall on North Oakdale ave. Refreshments will be served at 1 p.m., by members of the Ashland Health unit, and baby sitter service will be pro vided. Brings Object Youth's Confession ion Hillsboro. Ore. (U.R) De fense Attorney Arvin Goodman voiced strong objections yester day to an alleged confession ob tained from 17-year-old Jerry Dodele who is on trial here for the murder of Peter Ribbers, 65, last Nov. 11. Goodman claimed that the al leged confession was obtained after the youth had been kept awake and that it was not signed freely or-voluntarily but "as a result of physical and mental co ercion." - - : District Attorney . J ames K, Gardner said the state would be the first to refuse use of the con fession if it had not been given voluntarily. He insisted the boy was treated fairly but had to be questioned to get out the facts. " The jury was sent from the room during the arguments. Judge Arlie G. Walker was to rule on admission of the alleged confession today. Earlier yesterday, Recardo Marques, railroad employee, tes tified he loaned the boy a . .22 rifle and five shells on Nov. 11 and that when he unloaded the gun the nexV morning after it was returned there were only four shells. v - House To Vote On Pay Increase Washington (U.R) House members faced up to a tough decision todays whether to vote themselves a $10,000 an nual pay raise. Democratic, leaders sponsor ing the boost to $25,000 a year said congressional opposition came from "timid souls, mostly vocal." They predicted the bill will be approved overwhelming ly. .: -:V- ;-..;V; " But there were late. reports that some members, especially those from r rural areas where the present $15,000 pay looks like big money, were getting cold feet. Chairman. Emanuel .Cellar (D- N.Y.), of the House Judiciary committee which handled the bill, doubted if there would be enough of them to make any dif ference. He felt there would be no more than 150 members against the bill on the final roll call. CAP Squadron Has New Plane Assigned The light plane assigned to the Medford squadron of the Civil Air patrol was returned to Beaverton airport, Portland, last week end for a safety check up. All Air Force planes on loan to the CAP: must comply with rigid - safety v regulations and must be inspected and maintain ed periodically, according to military, civilian, and insurance specifications, to make all CAP aircraft the safest plnes in the air, and to make them available at all times for air search and rescue work. The L-16 type plane was flown to Portland Saturday af ternoon by First Lt. Stanley Shafer, operations officer and Second Lt.. Cecil Davis, training officer, who returned with an L-4 type plane for the Medford squadron Sunday afternoon. The pilots reported a routine and uneventful filght.
