And make it one of the lacy, syrupy, hearts-and-flowers type, she said. Dr. Frieda S. Kehm, director of the Association for Family Living, said . a woman "wants and needs constant assurance of affection and security." . "Expressions of love and en dearment are an important part of a woman's life," Dr. Kehm said. "To a man, these things aren't quite so important. He tends to take his wife's love for granted." The average man, Dr. Kehm said,, feels a little embarrassed about expressing the tenderness he feels for his spouse. "But Valentine greetings make it easy," she said. "All he has to do is 'select the one which says it for him." Despite their "emancipation," Dr. Kehm said, most women are till ' "hiffhlv deoendent upon men from the psychological and emotional standpoint. This, she said, is especially true of homemakers. "Their whole life is bound up emotionally "in the subject of love or manifestations of love, their husbands, their children, their homes, and their daily task on behalf of their families", she said. "Also, the housewife needs recognition. Where her husband is receiving recognition every day for his work, even in such a simDle thine as a paycheck, the wife seldom receives praise." l3r. Kehm said she favors the hearts-and-flowers Valentine be cause "the humorous type may seem clever but it isn,'t directed at her with an outright state ment that someone loves her."
