Recorder Point 122 Around Hollywood - Hollywood- (U.R) Westerns have been branded as bad tele vision fare for children, but one sagebrush hero , today defend ed their watch ing gunplayas "a - good way for youngsters to let off steam." . Horse operas of the home scrlensi were 'blasted recent , Aline Mosbr ly, by a self appointed TV approval organi zation, the National Association for Better Radio and Television. NAFBRAT declared violence m westerns made them objec tionable. But Bill Williams, who portrays Kit Carson in a TV series, explained the prob lems of how to make. a success ful oater. In the first place, he said, "You have to have gunplay and excitement or the kids won't look at the show." Want Action "In my home the children go to the kitchen unless the horses are running by on the screen," he said. "They think other children's shoves don't nave enougn action. "And what's wrong with ae tion? Kids have to have . an outlet phychiatrists say that. They let off their excess energy and frustrations by watching gunplay. "TV doesn't cause juvenile delinquency. Those kids need better surroundings and play grounds." - NAFBRAT's fight against Westerns on TV amazes Wil liams because "The program is tailored for children's interests. In fact, he confessed, to keep the kiddies happy he has to toss historical accuracy out' the win dow. - The real Kit Carson was 4 rough - talking, uneducated woodsman in a coonskin cap. Williams has to wear a cowboy hat to satisfy his young fans. "I wanted to wear the coonskin cap," he laments, and he must speak impeccable English to keep the parents happy. "Nobody is ever killed on the show," he continued. "L only shoot as a last resort to wound the villain. We lay down bru tality. . I can't hit anybody in the stomach or behind the neck. "I always twirl my gun while I'm thinking, too. Every child must learn to protect himself but we try to make him use his head first. "Carson only wore one gun, but I have to wear two,5 It's more trouble gettin' on and off that horse with the extra gun. And I never have much use for the extra -six-shooter. But the ty AL1NI MOSBT United Press Correspondent children expect two guns, .so 1 wear 'em.. "On the program Tm never seen smoking or in a saloon, either, no matter what 'the real life Carson was like. So how xould the show harm T children? "The final test," he concluded, "Should be for those NAFBRAT people to watch children play ing cowboy. They always want to play the hero. Nobody wants to be the bad guy. ' . State Civil Defense Activities Reviewed Salem (U.R) Civil defense in Oregon entered the , H-bomb planning phase in 1954 and saw the. shelter program set aside in favor of pre-attack dispersal and evacution of city- popula tions. ' State Civil Defense Director Arthur M. Sheets said one of the principal activities , during the year was testing 54 traffic control points surrounding the Portland critical target area. "The traffic control points where tested three times and they are . operational," Sheets said. Sheets said the priority pro ject for 1955 is completing plans for dispersing people from the target areas, as well as planning for receiving and caring for the thousands of evacuees. The . state wide civil air de fense warning system has been tested once a month " this year and will be tested at regular in tervals in 1955.
