HER HUSBAND'S FATHER COMPLAINS ABOUT FOOD What appeals to a child does not appeal to be a teenager, and what a teenager likes in food usually astounds an adult. Old people, on the other hand, often present more difficult feed ing problems than a young child does. A woman writes: (Q) "Mr husband'! father, . who is in his late sixties, lives . with us. We have three chil dren, ranging in age from six to 17 years. As my husband's salary is not large. I have to budget very carefully for everything, especially food. I ; usually, buy the less expen : sive cuts of meal and serve : them in as appetizing form w as I can. We have to use a lot of canned fruits and vege- . - tables, as the fresh and f roxen ones are too expensive. My ; f ajher-in-law is always com- . ' plaining about how tough the . meat is, how much he dislikes , this or that vegetable, and this --sets a bad example for the children. I would give him the ' food he likes if I could afford . it and if I had lime to cook separate meals for him. But, I can't afford it and I have plenty of work to do without , cooking extra meals for him. What shall I do?" "' (A) Why not talk to your father-in-law, in private, about the situation. Explain to him why you serve the food you do, and be sure to emphasize that "you would like "to give hinrthe food he likes. Let him know why you can't. " " " '. Then let him realize that his complaining is setting a bad ex ample for your children. Tell him that it makes things just that much harder for you to have the family feel that the best you can do is not good enough. ' If your father-in-law has a pension, even though it is small, why not ask him to give you "some money to buy the food 5ie likes and prepare it the way he likes it? This really would not make much extra work for .you; you will be cooking any ..way. - ' j ; You could explain this to your children by saying that older people have to have certain types of food for energy and to help their digestion. Also explain to them that, as "people grow older, they eat less and have less ap petite. They must be catered ;to, much like a semi-invalid if 'they are to 'be well-nourished and happy.
