ARE VOL! 7 Census Bureau Having Farm Count Troubles The U. S. Bureau of the Cen sus, which has met with consid erable difficulty in taking the 1954 census of agriculture, ap parently due to misunderstand ings on the part of farmers, last week, issued two informational bulletins about the census. The first, entitled "Why the Census of Agriculture is of Value to the Farmers," follows: Each 5 Years - The census of agriculture Is taken at 5-year intervals to pro vide reliable and up-to-date sta tistical information , about the more than 5,000,000 people de pend for food and raw materials for the manufacture of goods. In large part, the efficiency of American agriculture depends on this information. The census of agriculture data provide the foundation for the entire structure of the nation's agricultural statistics. : The federal government. Con gress and the executive agencies use the ir-formation to develop jndadminister farm programs. ; ' Crop and livestock reporting services and other statistical activities of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which provide estimates on farm industry trends that guide farmers, the government and others in their decisions, depend on benchmark data provided by the census. Used For Analysis , State and local agencies, farm organizations and others serving the farmer use the census data in their analyses of the farm situation in their areas. Manufacturers and marketers use the statistics to measure re sources for agricultural raw ma terials and, conversely, to de termine the farmers' needs for machinery, supplies and services which farmers buy for efficient farm operations. , Newspaper promotion "depart ments, advertising agencies and advertisers of products and serv ices used by farmers and farm families study agricultural statis tics for counties and other areas in laying out campaigns designed to reach potential customers. Bankers and other financial services employ agricultural cen sus statistics in evaluating con ditions and factors which govern their decisions on farm credit for the areas they serve. ' . . - Used By Farmers Farmers themselves apply cen sus data to their problems, although- these -data usually come to them indirectly through many different channels of informa tion. Statistics published in farm periodicals, in reports of market ing services, m radio farm in formation programs, and in other media that influence the farmer in making important decisions are taken either direct from cen sus reports or are based on them. The information supplied by Air Mail Field at Portland Vetoed , Portland (U.PJ The post of fice has' vetoed a proposal to es tablish Portland International airport as an air mail field, the Oregon Journal reported Satur day. x Sen. Guy Cordon (R-Ore.) told the Journal that the department had informed him that Portland had been considered as an air mail field, but the step was. not justified at the present. . Cordon was told that "existing organizations and facilities"can adequately process mails here, but if future developments make an air mail field necessary, it would be established. each farmer is treated as con fidential by the Census Bureau and. assurance is given that the information will be published only in statistical totals for each county so that operations of an individual farm are not revealed. The census law requires the farmers to supply the informa tion officially requested by the Census Bureau but also provides that this information cannot be used for taxation, regulation or investigation. The . census enumerators, ' in taking their oaths of office are sworn not to reveal the information ob tained from the farmers and the law provides severe penalties including fines and imprison ment if the confidential restric tions are violated.
