"Right through my new 25 cent socks," Edgar protested, more concerned with the dam age to his hose than the physical injury, The President chuckled with glee as he viewed an eight-foot square concrete slab he and Earl laid off the kitchen entrance in 1938 as a place for their parents to sit and rock in the evening. Scratched into the surface is the year and the names of those who had a part in the event 'Earl, Dwight, John" the Presi dent's son and "The Boss" father of the Eisenhower boys. The slab is about eight inches thick. "We mixed the concrete in the garage and wheeled it over in a wheelbarrow," the President recalled. "Boy, were we blis tered." The home was opened to the public in 1947, less than a year after the President's mother died. Slill Standing- -. Mr. Eisenhower found it "amazing how this old house, built in the cottonwood days, stands up with more than quar ter of a million people through it." ' He found that it does need some repairs, however, including I-beams and plaster to plug places where tourists gave gouged pieces, for souvenirs. (International Soundphoto) Pile Drivers May Strike in Demand For Compensation Portland (U.R) The AFL pile drivers' union was report ed to be considering strike ac tion today unless the state of Oregon or Washington pays ac cident compensation for four men drowned at Bonneville dam Aug. 20. A union spokesman said there was no complaint against the contracting firm which employ ed the men. He said neither state had been able to agree on which side of the Columbia channel the drownings occurred and that compensation claims therefore had not been paid. ' Five men died in the accident, which occurred when the . tug Muleduzer ventured too close to the Bonneville spillway and was dashed to the bottom of the spillway pool. The tug's master, Capt. Magnor J. Larsen, Astoria, was under federal maritime cov erage, but the other four victims came under state compensation. ; The spokesman said strike ac tion may be taken unless an equitable disposition was indi cated shortly. Use Mall Tribune Want Ads Senator Imposfer Receives Sentence Seattle (U.R) " U. S. Dis trict Judge William L. Lindberg yesterday sentenced Thomas E. Thomas, Seattle salesman, to nine months in the federal work camp at McNeil island for im personating a United States senator. It was the second time Thom as had been sentenced in the case. He received the same sen tence after his first trial, but the Circuit Court of Appeals threw out the first conviction on a technicality. . - The case was retried two weeks ago and Thomas again was convicted. He was found guilty of send ing a telegram to the warden of the Washington State prison in January of 1953, ordering a stay of execution for Turman and Utah Wilson. The Wilson broth ers were executed for thff slay ing of Jo Ann Dewey of Van couver, Wash.; only a few mo ments before the telegram arriv ed. - Railway and highway culverts make ideal locations for beaver dams.
