Rifle-Toting Grandma Repulses Seaborne Try To Regain Equipment Baltimore, Md. U.R) A construction company's crew was in full retreat Saturday after failing in a daring seaborne attempt to wrest its expensive equipmen from a rifle-wielding grandmother. The defiant. 57-year-old woman, Mrs. Wanda Sienkielewski, threw a chicken wire fence around the equipment Tuesday be cause she was tired of the firm parking it on her lawn without permission. Haiders Repulsed Late Friday, the Leo G. Butler Co., sent 10 burly raiders onto a barge in Bear creek behind her house in a bold bid to recapture the sewer-digging machinery. Mrs. Sienkielewski swung in action. Moving to the water's edge she lowered her .22 caliber rifle and warned: "111 let the first one that comes on my land have It" Nine of the raiders aot the noint and retreated in disorder. When one keot advancine. Mrs. Sienkielewski hauled off and shoved him back onto the barge. The cnmnanv hastily called off the attack. Mrs. Sienkielewski is hopping mad because the construction workers ignored her demands to get the equipment off her prop erty and. adding Insult to injury, referred to ner as "an oia wo man. May Auction Equipment She has announced she will never surrender the machinery until the company meets her claims for damages and parking fees. She disclosed that she might try to auction off the equipment If there isn't a satisfactory settlement very quickly. Meanwhile, she patrolled her fortress with the rifle and dared anybody to attempt to make off with the captive equipment. Navy Minesweeper Constructed at Astoria Astoria (U.R) The non-magnetic minesweeper Dash, first vessel of its type to be completed for the United States Navy, awaited assignment Saturday fol lowing commissioning ceremo nies at the Port of Astoria. The 165-foot wooden vessel was formally turned over to the Navy by its builders. Astoria Marine Construction Co.. and Lt. Cmdr. Robert Giamolti took command. The gray-painted vessel is built with laminated oak frames and keel and is equipped with the most modern minesweeping gear, much of it secret.' It carries a crew of five officers and 65 men. President Signs Bill On Indian Jurisdiction Denver U.R) President Eisenhower Saturday signed bill giving Oregon's Gov. Paul Patterson Jurisdiction over crim inal offenses and civil causes of action committed on Indian res ervations within the state. The president said he had ''grave doubts" about some of the provisions of the bill but ap proved it because its basic pur pose represented "still another step in granting complete polit ical equality to all Indians in our nation." It is the first of five being built by the Astoria firm. Joseph Mc Carthys' latest Reds-in-govern-ment investigation. The Senate Permanent Inves tigating subcommittee, which the Wisconsin Republican heads, Friday wound up the closed door phase of its search for pos sible Communists in the govern ment printing office. Public hearings will begin Monday. McCarthy told reporters Fri day that a former woman em ployee of the printing office had testified that she saw a fellow worker steal secret materials from the big printing agency. She said the alleged thefts were "sizeable" in number and cov ered a "considerable" period of time. He did not reveal the name of the witness or the accused worker. Neither did he say when it happened although he indicat ed it was some years ago. 16-Year-Old Said Crime School Head Los Angeles (U.R) A 16-year- old Arizona youth was accused Saturday of being the "brains" behind an "earn while you learn crime school" that taught bur glary and strong arm robbery. Sheriffs deputies smashed the alleged juvenile crime ring Fri day by rounding up 10 juveniles, including a young girl, and three adults. Deputies said the ring's , teen age "professor, here from Ari zona only a month, taught his young disciples such "subjects" as mugging old men and women, rolling drunks and breaking into stores. "The professor promised he was going to promote us to big-! ger jobs in Hollywood and Bev erly Hills where there was big money," deputies quoted one of the small fry "students" as saying. Deputies said the juveniles were believed to have netted thousands of dollars worth of loot in 20 "jobs" during the past month. Reds Forced U.S. Captives To Act In Surrender Movie, Repatriated Captive Says Freedom Village U.pj were sentenced to jau at camp Chinese Communists forced 500 captive Americans to act in a Korean battle and surrender movie used later for propaganda purposes, a repatriated Ameri can said Saturday. McMinnville Youth Drowns in Yamhill McMinnville (U.R) Walter Foster, 15, McMinnville, drown ed in the South Yamhill river Friday afternoon while trying to swim across the stream three miles south of Sheridan. The youth was the son of Wil bur Foster, McMinnville, and was the oldest of five brothers. The mother lives in Portland. Ten gallons of wine are re quired to distill a gallon of cognac. Meany Says Carpenters Will Return (o AFL Chicago George Meany, president of the American Fed eration of Labor, predicts that the Carpenters Union will come back into the AFL- There was no sound reason" for the 750,000-member Carpen ters Union to withdraw, Meany said. (U.R A former member of the Oregon State college faculty has been relieved of a teaching post at the University of Kansas City "at his own request," Univer sity Chairman Ernest E. Howard said Saturday. Howard said the teacher, Dr. Ralph Spitzer, has been granted a leave of absence to undertake research' work and additional study. Spitzer lost a similar Job at Oregon State college four years ago. He recently declined to answer questions about Commu nist party affiliation put to him by a Senate investigating sub committee. He was never ac cused of being a Communist at Oregon State college. After leaving Corvallis Dr. Spitzer went to Prague, Czecho slovakia, to attend a Communist-organized student congress and his passport was cancelled at The Hague, Netherlands, on his return trip.
