McCarthy said today the search for suspected Reds In the Government Printing Ofilce has "branched out" and involves more than one employee who has figured in the inquiry. The Wisconsin Republican called four new witnesses to ap pear in secret, before his Per manent Investigating subcommit tee today. One "important" wit ness, he said, was coming to Washington from a "very long distance." Not Identified As he has continually done during his investigation, McCar thy refused to identify witnesses or targets in the inquiry. He aid this would have to await the public hearings which will begin Monday. The only names to come to the surface have been those of Ed ward Rothschild, a bookbinder at the printing office, and his wife, Esther, who revealed through their attorney, Stanley B. Frosh, that they are under subpoena by the subcommittee. Not the Only One "I can say very definitely that Frosh's client is not the only one involved," McCarthy told reporters. "It has branched out a little more. 1 "It will involve others pres ently employed in the printing office or at least who were em ployed there within the past few days." Many Hopeful Carpenters Will Return to Union Chicago U.R) AFL Presi dent George Meany today said he was "very hopeful" that the rebellious 750,000 member car penter's union would rejoin the national federation. As a result of the carpenters withdrawal Wednesday, Dave Beck, dynamic president of the Teamsters Union, was elected a vice-president of the AFL and given a seat on the union's pow erful executive council. William L. (Big Bill) Hutche gon, the carpenter's president emeritus was first vice-presi-t" ?nt of the 13 member council. He was forced from the position when his union walked out. The 12 other members moved up a notch and Beck came in at the bottom. Rose From Truck Driver Beck, 55, rose from driving a laundry truck to teamsters' presi dent, during a 28-year-career with the union. He is a power ful West Coast labor leader with headquarters at Seattle. As yet, the carpenters have not withdrawn from city or state AFL group. Their spi with the national federation came Wednesday after a dispute over a proposed "no raiding" agree ment with the CIO. Omar N. Bradley, and J. Law- ton Collins. Badley, the modest, soft-spok en "GIs general," win step down tomorrow as chairman of the joint chiefs. "Lightning Joe" Collins will leave his ' post as Army chief of staff. At the Pentagon today, Col lins was awarded a gold star, in lieu of a third legion of merit decoration, for his services as commander of the 25th Infantry Division in the Solomons islands during World War II. Navy Sec retary Robert B. Anderson pre sented the medal in the name of President Eisenhower. Bread Variety Important There's infinite variety in sandwich fillings. Also in the stuff that holds the fillings in place ... the bread. Skip the usual white and wholewheat and try round hamburger buns, long frankfurter buns, French rolls, French sour dough rolls, English muffins, eanned Boston Brown Bread, date-nut bread, Swedish, Russian or other rye breads with or without caraway seeds or any other type of bread you may fancy. Chili-Bologna Sandwich Spread Combine H pound finely chop ped or ground bologna (about 1 cup), 4 tablespoons chili sauce, 2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions, mayonnaise to moisten; chill. Good on any bread that isn't sweet. Liver Sausage Sandwich Spread Mash Va pound liver sausage (about .1 cup), and combine with cup finely chopped celery, 1 teaspoons horseradish, 14 tea spoons Worcestershire sauce and 3 tablespoons mayonnaise. Good on any bread that isn't sweet. Salami Sandwich Spread Combine lb cup minced soft salami or summer sausage, 1 finely chopped hard-cooked egg, 2 tablespoons pickle relish, 1 teaspoon prepared mustard and enough mayonnaise to moisten. Sliced Cold Cuts Sandwiches Try these combinations with any favored bread or rolls. Liver sausage, sliced tomato, lettuce, mayonnaise. Ham and Swiss cheese spread with mustard or use horeradish butter. Corned beef between slices of bread spread with horseradish mustard butter. Luncheon meat, sliced Ameri can cheese, mustard. Salami, sliced tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, mayonnaise. Summer sausage, egg salad, lettuce. Bologna or summer sausage with thin topping of cole slaw. Beef Short Ribs Masculine Favorite According to restaurant sur veys short ribs are a mas culine favorite. Plentiful ribs are specially priced and can be made to taste just as good at home as elsewhere. To prepare them as the restaurant people do, so that the rich tasting meat is nearly falling off the bone, cook them slowly for several hours. J Like pot roast and other less tender cuts of meat, short ribs should be browned, then braised slowly in liquid in a covered pan over low heat. The liquid can be( barbecue sauce, tomato juice, 'canned tomatoes or a sweet sour sauce. Cooking Beef Outdoors Here are good beef cuts for outdoor grilling and using up more of your share of plentiful beef: Hamburgers are improved in flavor by mixing in onion or onion juice along with the salt and pepper; then sprinkle lib erally with celery salt and garlic salt just before removing from fire. Steaks of any kind and size are good grilled outdoors but the one-incher is preferred by most. Cubes or chunks of beef are fine cooked on skewers. These are extra tasty if marinated in French dressing or vinegar and water overnight. If you like a barbecue flavor, baste meat every few minutes with your favorite barbecue sauce. Even large roasts can be cooked successfully outdoors, but this requires a spit or some other means of turning the meat slow ly while it is cooking and calls Friday Angus 14. lsU . Cherry Festival Sauce . Ideal for any cottage pudding, bread pudding or custard. Heat 34 cup water and b cup sugar to boiling. Add 2 cups dark sweet cherries that have been halved and pitted, 1 slice lemon and cook for 10 minutes. Remove cherries and lemon slice. Mix cornstarch with V cup cold water and add to cherry syrup. U.R) Two small boys were found suffocat ed inside an abandoned ice box here late last night, the third tragedy of its kind in 38 hours. In a day and a half, unused ice boxes have lured 11 curious children to their death. The latest victims, whose bodies were found just before midnight, were Edward P. (Butchy) Ferguson, 3, and Michael T. Rogers, 4. A posse of 200 police, firemen and volun teers had searched for four hours before one searcher, Lucien Du val, 33, happened to look in the ice box in a Haverhill dump. "I just got through reading about those other children so I decided to take a look," Duval said. Earlier yesterday an abandon ed refrigerator at Richmond, Va., yielded the bodies of four barefoot boys. Wednesday night the bodies of five youngsters were found in an ice box at Crawfordsville, Ark. In Washington, the Refrigera tion Trade Association of Ameri ca called an industry wide con ference for next Tuesday to consider ways of preventing old ice boxes from becoming death traps. Safety officials urged families to remove hinges and latches from any ice box or other air tight container left where chil dren might play. Arrest of Youths Clears Up Burglaries Coquille U.R) Some 20 bur glaries in three western states were cleared up today with the arrest of two teenage boys here, police said. - Police Chief G. W. McMullen said the pair, ages 16 and 17, admitted robbing establishments in Salem,. Lebanon and Burns, Ore.; Reno, Nev., and Santa Calif. Inland Steel Chief Will Head Foreign Economy Commission Denver (U.R) President Eisenhower today selected Clar ence Randall, chairman of the board of the Inland Steel Corp., to head the new federal commis sion to build a new foreign eco nomic program. The commission on foreign economic policy which the Chi cago steel executive will head was created by Congress this year when it extended the re ciprocal trade agreement pact for one year. Under the law, the commis sion 'will study and review all foreign economic policies of the United States preparatory to Haymes' Lawyers Discuss Divorce Hollywood U.R) Attorneys for crooner Dick Haymes and his estranged wife, Nora, meet today to discuss the couple's impending divorce, which would free the singer to marry Rita Hayworth. Haymes' attorney, Robert Eat on, and his wife's lawyer, Sam my Hahn, said they would talk over a "financial settlement." At the same time, Eaton said he planned to confer with At torney General Herbert Brown ell concerning the singer's pos sible deportation for alleged violation of the McCarran-Wal-ter act. Brownell, who is investigating the Mexican wetback labor prob lem in California, was scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles tonight. Haymes, now singing at a Las Vegas night club, refused to say if he planned to marry Miss Hayworth. He did say, however, she was "100 per cent" behind him in his deportation fight. The singer now is free on $900 bond and scheduled to ap pear before an immigration ex aminer August 26. As a Citizen of Argentina, he is charged with illegally re-entering this country after traveling to Hawaii to woo Miss Hayworth. The selection of Randall was announced at the summer White House offices at Lowry Air Force Base here as the President spent another morning devoted largely to signing legislation in consultation with Bernard Shan ley, special counsel to Mr. Eisen hower. Robert Cutler, administrative assistant to the President and chief White House liaison for the National Security Council flew here from Washington to report to Mr. Elsenhower and then flew back during the night. Shanley will return to Washington this afternoon. Sherman Adams, the assistant to the President, will join the White House party here Monday and remain for two or three days.
