Swooping down on Manhat tan's silk-stocking East Side dis trict in the early morning hours, vice squad detectives broke up at least four "dating" parties and arrested more than a dozen persons including Minot F. "Mickey" Jelke, 22-year-old heir to a Chicago oleomargarine for tune. Blow to Racket The lightning sweep was a powerful blow to the flourishing New York call-girl racket which sold lonely men voluptuousness for prices ranging up to $500 a night. Assistant District Attorney Anthony J. Leibler said the raids were connected and the persons who were arrested "axe believed to know each other." Jelke, a publicity man, and a TV bit actress were charged with white slavery, but Jelke denied the charges. Leibler said Jelke had used his own lavish apartment for the "dates" to arranged between wealthy businessmen and curva ceous girls-about-town for prices ranging from $50 up. Rivaled Luciano' Scope Authorities said the scope of the cafe society call-girl racket rivaled even that of Luciano, who was arrested in 1936 when police broke up his notorious East Harlem vice syndicate. Just as in the Luciano case, the early morning raids featured marijuana, unregistered loaded guns, and teen-aged girls. Police said many of the persons wanted in the case had left the city. A search was on for others whose names were learned from tape recordings of telephone conver sations. Jelke and two other persons charged with engaging in prosti tution were arraigned in Felony Court less than eight hours after their arrests. Leibler described the charges aeainst Jelke as including "com pulsory prostitution, receiving the earnings of prostitutes, con spiracy and L'ullivan law viola tions." Police found. Brief on Medford-Klamath Air Service Will Be Given in Washington The aviation committee of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce met last night at the Jackson hotel with representa tives from Klamath Falls and Ashland chambers to make de cisions preparatory to drawing up a brief to favor airline service between Medford and Klamath Falls. At the suggestion of Glenn Jackson, vice-president of California-Oregon Power company, the groups decided to present a single brief combining statistics from' the Medford, ' Ashland, Klamath Falls and Grants Pass areas. Car inx PHONE 2-2588 Lawrence Miles Fund Aided by Classmates The Lawrence Miles Memor ial Fund, which is administered by the Jackson county .chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, was swelled considerably Thursday when a group of sixth grade students at Roosevelt school turned in their collections to the fund. Law rence, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lew Miles and a member of the class which made the - contribution, died in Los Angeles August 4 of acute polio. The family request ed that in lieu of flowers, friends contribute to the polio fund or to the. John Mann Memorial Fund. Letters Requested The committee asked local merchants to contact their sup pliers and to have those who are handicapped .by the, lack of Klamath - Medford air service write letters to the chambers of commerce. The letters would be attached to the brief being pre pared for the CAB. ' Glenn Jackson was picked to represent the area at the Wash ington, D.C. hearing if such rep resentation is needed. He was asked to contact Washington by telephone to determine if local representation at the hearing would be worthwhile. The com mittees decided it would be use- I less to expend energy urging the board to hold its hearing on the west coast. Two Trips Daily Frank J. Van Dyke, chairman of the Jackson chamber's avia tion committee, stressed that his group wants the service and that it doesn't care which of the three airlines that have applied get it. He added that those making the brief should stress the necessity of having two round-trips daily. The vital thing, according to Jackson, is to convince the CAB that the airline is economically feasible for the air line that gets the approval. And then, he con tinued, the cities must give the support necessary to keep the line operating. Community of Interest Walt Mclntyre, a Klamath Falls representative, observed that the brief should prove to the CAB the community of interest between the two cities. Van Dyke announced his com mittee would inform the Klam ath chamber of its planning for the writing of the brief by Mon day. The Klamath Falls cham ber's aviation committee will meet Tuesday and then contact the Medford committee. North Carolina Swimmer Fails in English Channel Folkestone, Eng. (U.R) Bob Paysour, North, Carolina long distance swimmer and the only American in a field of 13 men and women trying to swim the English channel, quit Friday only seven miles short of his goal the English coast. The Tar Heel swimmer was forced to give up his France to England swim by the recurrence of a cramp in his left leg. The muscle was pulled in training last week. Welsh Girl Quits . Miss Jennie James, a 24-year-old Welsh swimmer, also gave up an attempt to swim, the chan nel from England to France early Friday; She became sea sick after five hours in the water despite the reported ideal sea and calm warm weather. However 10 swimmers six Egyptians, three Britons and a Dane still were battling the chan nel waters Friday morning in an attempt to swim from England to France or vice versa. The information was contain ed in a letter from North Kor ean Gen. Nam II, chief Commu nist truce delegate, to Maj. Gen. William K. Harrison, senior Al lied delegate. Talks Recessed The latter was handed over at a brief meeting between liaison officers. The high-level truce ne gotiations are recessed until Aug. 19 when the delegates again will take up the problem of exchanging "prisoners of war. Nam said the Communists es tablished a new prisoner of war camp at Yul. Camps 11 and 13 have been expanded, he said, while No. 12 has been moved from Sinchang to Jaedong and No. 14 from Kipsong to Anju.
