Jess Floras 'Very Good'; Stops Padres San Francisco (U.R) Jess Flores, a tall fastballer from the land of the frijole, has a reputa tion in the Pacific Coast league for being very good or very oth erwise. Thursday night, tortured by his record of 17 losses, the 36-year-old tortilla lover, pitched like a star. . Sacramento's unpre dictable veteran stopped San Diego with a two-hit shutout as. the la:t- place Solons won their third in a row from the Pads, 4-0. Flores fanned seven and walk ed none as he picked up his eighth seasonal success. Solon manager Joe Gordon had his 14th homer, one of 11 hits off Padre pitcher Jack Salveson The game consumed only an hour and 33 minutes. Just Opposite The contest at Oakland, where in the Acorns kept their league leadership, was ridiculously op posite, so far as time was con cerned. It took Oakland 2 hours and 53 minutes to dispose of Los Angeles, 9-7. The pitching of George Bam berger, who won his ninth though relieved in the final pan el, explained the delay. Normal ly a slow worker, Bamberger walked nine. Second-place Hollywood stay ed a half-game off the Oaks pace by downing San Francisco 3-0 on righthander Mel Queen's spiffy three-hitter. And at Seattle, the defending champions won two games from Portland, 5-2 and 4.-2. MONDAY, AUGUST 18 For entry blanks Phone 2-8007 or 3-2915 Cheney Studs To Scrap Bandon Nine Saturday, Sunday at Fairgrounds The Medford Cheney Studs, unbeaten in their last six South western Oregon league baseball struggles, will be out to extend their victory string in the cir cuit this week-end but they will have to overcome some rugged opposition if they do. That opposition is the Bandon Millers, whom the . Studs en counter at 8 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the fair grounds ball diamond here. Both potent hitting and top caliber pitching are boasted by the Mil lers who last week split with the loop leading Black Sox. Big name on the Bandon chucking roster, a man who should prove a drawing card in himself, is Ad Liska, exponent of the submarine pitch. Liska, after a few seasons in the ma jors came down to the coast league and for many seasons was a fixture and workhorse of the Portland Beavers; ranking as one of their, top all-time hurl- ers. He is expected to get into at least one game of the series. Dangerous Hitter Also on the tossing staff are Bill Hanauska and Bailey Brem, Hanauska with 51 has the second best strikeout mark in the loop. In batting he is regarded dan gerous as a long ball hitter. He is an ex-Willamette university ace and a veteran of semi-pro circles. Brem was a member of Oregon State college's coast and NCAA district championship club this spring. Bandon has five men hitting above the .300 percentage mark. They are Bill Burgher, catcher and ex-Portland Beaver, .406; Chuck DeAutremont, rightfield er and ex-Southern Oregon col lege. .356: Ray Stratton, left- fielder, .333; Alva Brown, first base, .304, and Lee Shinn, third base, .302. Others who may break into the starting line-up are .- Pete Goodbrod, ex-OSC ace, center fielder; Joe Tom, from Univer sity of Oregon, shortstop, ' and Jim Sinovic, second base. For the week-end the Studs will have Paul Gehrman, Terry Maddox and Clarence Mellbye on their pitching staff. Mellbye will be on- first base and, if and when he doesn't pitch. Jack Gor don at second, Pete Bianchi at short and ' Alex McDonald at third may round out the infield with Don Fawcett, George Sand ers and George Gitzen in re serve. 4 The outfield may be selected from among Moose Blevins, Snuffy Smith, Maddox and Faw cett. It appears that the curtain will drop on semi-pro baseball ill Medford this week-end. The series is the last at home in the league for the Studs and, so far, they have announced no plans for non-league scrambles here. Medford ends the regular sea son at Coos Bay on August 23 and 24. Shaughnessy Set All Shauehnessy p 1 a y - off frays will be at North Bend Teams that finish the regular season second and fourth will play the first game on August 31 . and those that wind up first and third will play the nightcap of the doubleheader. On September 1 the losers of the previous day will play the first game and the. winners of the openers the second game. Medford needs one more win to ascertan a play-off berth. However, a Roseburg loss will assure Medford a Shaughnessy spot. Golf Exhibition Pairings Made When Helen Dettweiler, top notch pro golf instructor, ap pears in an exhibition at Rogue Valley Country club on Tuesday, August 19. She will compete in a foursome with Rogue Valley women. She will be paired with Mrs. Mahr Reymers against Mrs. Maxine Hammond and Mrs. W. W. Davies. The exhibition has been set for 10 a.m. and will be a nine-hole affair. A clinic has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Miss Dettweiler is regarded as the top woman teaching pro in the game. ' Two Games Left In Valley Loop Grants Pass will go to Butte Falls and Ashland to Glendale Sunday to make-up rained out tussles in the Rogue Valley Baseball circuit. The tilts will wind up the regular season schedule of the league. Grants Pass needs the win to claim sole first place for the regular slate. The Merchants have lost one game and Cave Junction, which has finished its campaign, dropped two. . Ashland and Glendale will scrap for third and fourth posi tions. ' Fish Luck Good On Upper Rogue Portland (U.R) Mid-summer fishing generally is good throughout most of Oregon, the Oregon State Game commission said Friday in its weekly fishing report. Some limit catches were reported in both central and northeastern sections of the state.
