MeKellar Unseated, Browning Defeated In Tennessee Vote .Nashville 0J.R) Rep. Albert Gore unseated 83-year-old Sen. Kenneth MeKellar who was seeking an unprecedented sev enth consecutive term in the Senate and Attorney Frank Clement defeated Gov. Gordon Browning Friday in Tennessee's Democratic primary. Significent Developments The primary produced sev eral significant political devel opments: 1. It removed the aging Me Kellar from the Senate seat he has held for the past 36 years . and will leave vacant the chair manship of the powerful Senate Milk Prices Going Up in Three Areas Of Central Oregon Portland (U.R) Milk prices are going up and butterfat con tent of milk is going down in three central Oregon counties. The Oregon Milk Marketing Administration announced Fri day that minimum milk . prices ,wih be raised Hi cents a quart and butterfat content of stand ard milk will be lowered from 3.8 to 3.6 per cent in Crook, Des chutes and Jefferson counties ef fective August 16. 23 Cents a Quart This means consumers will pay 23 cents a quart for milk in stead of the present official min imum of 2IV2 cents in Bend. Actually, however, the prices will go up only one cent as re tail price of milk at Bend has been 22 cents. The order, however, has no effect on prices at Prineville, Redmond and Madras because minimum price in these commu nities has been 23Vi cents a quart since April. R:7ht Reserved , , The order also establishes a dual butterfat-milk basis for pro ducer quotas.-A top limit of 4.4 per cent was set for butterfat quota but the administration re served the right to- raise this if it feels it is justified by market demands. v. . Producer prices under the new order will be.S1.08 a pound for butterfat and "S2.27 a hun dred-weight for milk. 2nd Major Contract Due at The Dalles The Dalles U.R- The sec ond major contract for construc tion of the S350.000.000 The Dalles dam on the Columbia riv er will be opened to bidders August 21, Col. Thomas H. Lips comb, Portland district army en gineer, announced Friday. These bids will be for con struction of the 2370-foot con crete spillway, including tainter gates and excavation for the tail race and approach channel. The cost of the spillway section was estimated by Col. Lipscomb at more than $15,000,000. 1 Appropriations committee and and the post of Senate president pro tem, both of which MeKellar held, when Congress reconvenes next January. 2. It clouded the hopes of Memphis political leader Ed Crump for a statewide comeback in Tennessee politics. While Crump lost in backing MeKellar, he picked a winner in endorsing Clement, a 32-year-old former G-man for governor. Partial Defeat for Kefaurer 3. It spelled a partial defeat for Sen. Estes Kefauver who had reluctantly injected himself into the gubernatorial race in defense of Browning after Browning had been attacked for his role in the Democratic National Con vention where the Tennessee delegation voted against seating Virginia because it would not take the so-called loyalty pledge Kefauver pointed out that he and not ' Browning was respon sible for the Tennessee vote, but states' rights adherents continu ed angered over what they con sidered an affront to a sister state. The 44-year-old Gore piled up a 65,000 vote lead in his triumph over MeKellar. Returns from z-iio of trte state s 2,423. pre cincts gave Gore 246.540 votes to MeKellar 's 181.021. In the governor's race, with 2,103 pre cincts reporting, Clement 222,991 votes to 201,313 Browning. had for Rhee Feels Talks Won't Bring Peace Panmunjom, Korea (U.R) South Korean President Syng- man Rhee said Friday he does not believe and never has be lieved the truce talks at Pan munjom would end the war in Korea. "I have never had any hope that they would result in peace," the 77-year-old president said at Seoul. "I do not have any hope now. "Until the Soviet Union fully understands they cannot defeat the free nations, no peace is go ing to mean anything." The Chinese Communist radio at Peiping seemed just as certain the armistice talks would fail, buj for a different reason. The truce negotiations have been re cessed, but will be resumed Mon day. Peiping charged the U. S. is calling recesses in the talks to 'vreck" the negotiations. The Red radio accused the U.N. of violating "agreed prin ciples" in calling the current recess.
