Auto Races Sunday at New Track The first races at Medford's new auto speed bowl are sched uled for Sunday with the rival ry to get underway at 1 p.m. Promoters E. H. Claasen and Ray Ried said that stock cars and possibly a few "hot" cars will participate this week. The two said that they have been pressed for time and that the races may not be up to specta tors' expectations. They will try their best, however, they said to put on a good racing program. Hot cars are expected for next week's races. Have Lease The two men this week were granted lease of airport proper ty by the city council. Giants Seek New Miracle New York U.PJ If anybody has an old spare miracle around. please pack it up and send it to Leo Durocher of the Giants, who will be glad to pay the shipping charges. At a moment when the Dodg ers were flying high on the ex citement of Carl Erskine's no- hitter and near perfect game, 5 to 0 ,over the Cubs, the Giants were practically in panic. They were shaky in the field they weren't hitting, they blew two games out of three to the last-place Pirates, they dropped five full games behind the Brooks, and they lost catcher Wes Westrum for two weeks with a broken Index finger. Thus, unless Durocher can unearth a new miracle to match the one which brought the Giants the 1951 flag, it looks as if the race will be all over shortly. OILERS WIN Vancouver, Wash. QUART 2-JLJ w Jm PINT dttjy Pitching Too Perfect Game Brooklyn (U.R) Carl Er- skine of the Dodgers, author of baseball's latest no-hit game, re- fleeted Friday on what miRht have been if he only hadn't been in such a hurry to get out of the rain. In the jubilation of the Dodger dressing room, the handsome, 25-year-o 1 d hight-hander ex plained how he walked pitcher Willard Ramsdell of the Cubs on four hastily thrown balls in the third inning Thursday and thus missed an opportunity to pitch the major leagues' first perfect game since 1922. "The rain was coming on fast," Erskine related. "We had a 4-0 lead' at the time and we wanted to get in 4V4 innings to make it an official ball game. The boys whipped the ball di rectly back to me after each out to save time. Coudn't Find "Then, there at the plate was Ramsdell, the only guy who couldn't hit the ball out of the park if I teed it up for him," Erskine went on. "I threw him four fast balls. But I pitched so fast I couldn't get them over Red Sox Pay Huge Bonus To Chucker St. Louis (U.R) Frank Bau mann, an 18-year-old pitching sensation, became the top man at $125,000 in the Boston Red Sox' parade of high-priced kid stars Friday. The signing of the brilliant young left hander climaxed the series of owner Tom Yawkey's maneuvers in the bonus player market. And it provided ample indication that Yawkey may switch from an established pol icy of high-salaried regulars to put his bankroll behind a youth move. ' Slugger Signs Just a few hours before Bau mann signed, the Sox announc ed the acquisition of Martin Keough, 18, a slugging Pomona, Calif., outfielder for a price "better than $100,000." A few days ago, the-money-ls- no-object Bostonians parted with $77,000 for a 17-year-old Port land, Ore., catcher, Jerry Zim merman, and put out $86,000 for the signature of pitcher Ed die Urness of The Dalles, Ore. Except for that one lapse, Er- skine might have become the first National League pitcher of the modern era to fashion a per fect game. Six flawless pitching performances are listed in the records, the latest thrown by Charley Robertson of the White Sox in 1022. The thunderstorm finally struck while the Cubs were bat ting in the fourth inning, but after a 44-minute delay, Er skine retired 18 men in a row with his brilliant assortment of fast-balls, curves and occasional sliders to complete his near- perfect, 5-0 no-hitter.
