The an swer depends largely on the age of her children at that time. The 56-year old widow who wrote the following letter dis turbed about her children's re actions: (Q) "I have been keeping company with a widower old er than myself. He has two married tone and a single daughter who, through an ac cident, gets mentally ill. I have two married daughters. If your chil dren and this man's children witrn tiHlnc. or even teenagers, you should consider their reactions before making a final decision. Step parents are often difficult to ad Just to. But as both your and this man's children are now married and In homes of their own, that problem does not arise. The un married daughter of the man you are thinking of marrying should welcome having a wom an In the home to take care of her when she is ill. Before you marry this man. call a conference of your dauKh ters and their husbands. Tell them you have been lonely and that you have found someone you love enough to marry. I am sure that they will rejoice with you if they are the right kind of people. If they oppose your re marriage, go ahead anyway and let them feel as they wish about the matter. Only selfishnen could make them oppose your decision. Suggest to the man you are planning to marry that he do the same with his sons. Then, if all turns out as well as I predict, arrange to have a Joint family gathering before you are mar ried. This will gives both sides a chance to become acquainted and friendly before you take the final step. If you have a personal prob lem, write Elisabeth Hurlock In care of this newspaper. PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS OF CALCIUM A 11)1 Dr. Beady Today, folks, it isn't just Doc Brady having a pipe dream. It is the real McCoy, stuff copied right out of a textbook, without em broidery. If any medical colleague bog gles at any thing in this piece today the doctor is not making a mon key of me, he is vainly tut-tutting one of the foremost authorities: Functions of Calcium (i) Essential for ossification of bone. (li) Regulates excitability of nerve fibres and nerve centres. (lii) Necessary for adequate con traction of heart muscle. (iv) Necessary for clotting of blood and curdling of milk. (v) Diminishes permeability of ' capillary endothelium. (Applied Physiology, by Sam son Wright, M.D., FRCP., Ox ford University Press) It Is well to remember, too, that vitamin D aids calcium in all of these functions. They click together, where either one alone might not be adequate. Physiological chemists have not yet determined precisely how the calcium in food is con verted Into bone, nerve, artery and other tissues. But they know that calcium in the bones exists in two forms, namely, calcium carbonate, and tri-calcium phos phate. Calcium carbonate is chemically identical with egg shell, chalk, limestone and mar ble. Tri-calcium phosphate is a compound containing over twice as much calcium and phosphor us. Besides calcium and phos phorus, other elements are pres ent in bones, teeth, nerves and other body tissues, notably mag nesium and small quantities of potassium, sodium, chlorine, flu orine and iron. Whether an optimal daily ra tion (that is, two or three times as much as nutrition authorities consider necessary to prevent manifestations of nutritional de ficiency) of calcium and vita- speeds or helps the knit ting or healing of fractures Is a moot question. Scientifically or theoretically it should do so, and in any case it can do no harm to give the patient the benefit of the doubt. In actual practice, well, the old timers still in prac tice were so reluctant to take up the "vitamin fad" that this pru ciple has been applied in prac tice only in the past ten or fif teen years not long enough to warrant any conclusion as to its efficacy. Long bones (of thigh, leg, arm and forearm) grow In length at the junction of epiphyses (car tilaginous ends near joints) and diaphyses (shafts). It is my be lief that an adequate dally ra tion of calcium and vitamin D, not for a few months but throughout childhood and early youth promotes growth in stat ure. Mind, now, I can't prove this and I can't even cite any eminent medical authority to corroborate my belief. But there it is. Take It or leave it, but don't try to argue the point with me.
