Grass Becoming Important Farm Crop in United States Washington (U.R) Grass is becoming as important a farm crop as corn and cotton in the minds of Agriculture Depart ment officials and farmers. A concentrated drive to im prove the quality of America's pasture land is in progress. The drive is spearheaded by a steer ing committee of 12 department experts four in Washington and eight in the field. Each of the states also has some kind of grassland management program of its own, either at state or county level. The names of local programs range from Arkansas' "Blanket of Green," to Indiana's "Profit from Pasture." The aim is to put all the coun try's almost 1,000,000,000 acres of pasture plus marginal land with the 10 to 15 per cent now under "improved management." That means fertilization, rota tion and other attentions given cultivated crops. No Idle Dream Considering that improved fields of broomegrass, ladino clover, alfalfa and other grasses would have the wherewithal to add 10,000,000 to 15,000,000 tons Shoots From Cherry Trees Sent Back To Japanese Home Washington (U.R) Offshoots of Washington's famed Japanese cherry trees have been sent back to their native land to help re vive their dying ancestral groves. The decorative shrubs, which line the Potomac liver and sur round Washington's Tidal Basin, were Dresented to the city on March 27, 1912, as goodwill gifts from the city of Tokyo. Before World War II. the flow, erine cherry trees grew abun dantly along the Arakawa river and around the Imperial Palace moat in Japan. During the war. however, beauty was sacrificed for human sustenance as many of the trees were cut down for firewood and for timber to build homes. The remaining trees were deprived of care and soon fell into decline. Askl For Culling! The Japanese Government Overseas Agency recently asked the United States for cuttings from thriving trees. These would be grafted onto the war-depleted Tokyo groves, supplying horti cultural nutrition to the dying Japanese stock. The Department of Interior TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY Thursday, May I. Sl of meat to American tables, a re mark by one Agriculture Depart ment expert seems an under statement: "The grasslands program be ing pushed by the department in cooperation with the land grant colleges is by no means an idle bureaucratic exercise." Improvement in g r as s lands which have been called Amer ica's largest undeveloped poten tial for increased food output, is of specific importance now. The country is up against the prob lem of declining livestock feed reserves on one hand and in creasing livestock numbers on the other. The amount of grain needed for potential steaks and roasts is much less when plenty of good pasture and hay are available. Sod is the perfect soil conser vation measure. Because our land frontier has gone as far as it can go, taking care of existing land is of prime' importance. Perhaps the greatest asset the grassland programs advertise is that grass can provide one of the best means for adjusting farm output to the country's needs. For example, when surplus of grain or other crops is in pros pect, deteriorating land can be planted to soil-holding sod crops which would at the same time produce meat and dairy prod ucts. On the other hand, grass land can be safely plowed up when an emergency demands a temporary Increase in cultivated crops. There are no special federal funds set aside for the grassland program but farmers may re ceive aid under existing pro grams agricultural conserva tion plans to carry out pasture improvement. Conference May Aid Most of the state and federal efforts are aimed now at publi cizing the problem until all farm ers are aware of it. They are counting on the Sixth Interna tional Grassland conference here next summer to add impetus to their drive. To be held at Pennsylvania State college, it will be the first time since the conferences began 25 years ago that international experts will meet in this country. All 65 countries invited to at tend have accepted, which means about 2,500 experts will pin point the problem on a world level for the seven-day meeting STRIKES FOR FAMILY-Vineent Kasprzak, 29 (arrow), an inmate of Statcville Prison at Joliet, 111., sits atop 100-foot water tower in prison yard. Forty cuttings, five shoots each from the eight flowering vari eties, were shipped by air to Tokyo. Three of these were from the 11 remaining original trees. The cuttings were 6 to 10 inches in length, with at least five buds apiece. Government officials an nounced they "were happy to make the cuttings available for return to the City of Tokyo as an expression of renewed friend ship and good will between Japan and the United i States." It was this same expression on the part of Japan, they reminded, which brought about "the original gift of flowering trees which now circumvent the Tidal Basin and have such beauty and meaning to the people of this country."
