In 1 942 the Arizona Agricul ture Experiment Station devel oped a process for removing W 1 fluorine from water by filter ing it through ground bone; though In your booklet "Save Your Teeth" you say no method has been found. On the basis of what I saw when I visited the "lonely isles" Tris tan da Cunha in the South Atlan tic about midway between Mon tevideo and Cape of Good Hope two years ago, and what I read in the medical and dental jour nals, I'd vote for fluorinating the water supply if the amount of fluorine naturally present is much less than 1 part per mil lion. Their drinking water Is from the cra ter of a volcano high above the seaside plateau where they live. Chemical tests of the water showed from 0.20 to 0.35 parts of fluorine per million. There is still some controversy between various groups in this country over the wisdom of flu orinating public water supplies when the fluorine naturaly pres ent is much less than one part per million. , Investigators now believe that drinking water containing less than 2 parts per million of fluo rine (fluorides) protects the teeth against carles (cavity for-, mation), but more than 2 parts per million may cause mottled enamel. This makes the perman ent teeth opaque white, unlike the normal pearly lustre of good teeth, and In many instances pro duces a yellow or brown stain which sometimes Is almost black. The form of the teeth is not affected. The stain is irre movable. The only way to pre vent mottled enamel, In commu nities or districts where the drinking water naturally con tains more than 2 parts of fluo rine per million, Is to change the public water supply to a source or import drinking water from a source where there Is little or no fluorine In the water. Some good dentists In commu nities where the drinking water contains little or no fluorine be lieve In and practice application of an extremely dilute solution of fluorides to the surfaces of the teeth two or three times a year when patients report for in spection and prophylaxis. This practice, so far as I can learn, is commendable.
