Cil. THE DOCTOR JUST STRINGS HIM ALONG 111 Dr. Brad? A man aged 87 says his doctor told him he had a heart murmur. Ho uiod to go to church reg ularly and do what ever in reason he wanted to, but since the doc tor told him about the heart murmur he has a fixed idea thnt he is In bad shape. So far It ee mi sane enough, but what follows makes me wonder whether the man is pulling my leg or whether he is a victim of Iatrogenic heart dis ease you know, if you're a regular render of this column, that Is heart trouble engendered by the doctor. If the doctor told the man he (the doctor) detected a "mur mur" when he listened to the heart, and gave no opinion as to the significance or insignifi cance of the "murmur," I'd ad vise the man to have no further truck with the charlatan. To say a person has "mur mur" a humming or blowing sound heard in addition to or in place of one of the normal heart sounds is not a dlognosls. In effect it is Just a way to evade responsibility to the patient or the patient's family. I hope every victim of this wretched trick will take this statement of mine to the doctor who fold him the "murmur" and ask him to explain himself. If not thnt, then I hope the victim will light his lantern and go out and search for an honest doctor. The doctor who tells a pa tient the patient has a "mur mur" and doesn't tell the patient what It means Is on the some low level ns the doctor who dis misses a patient with assurance that the illnpss or Indisposition is "Just a cold." It is easy for me to say that the doctor should be honest enough to say: "I don't know yet what your trouble is. I'll have to study your case or observe de velopments In order to make a diagnosis." But I don't know whether I'd dare to be as frank as that in practice. I tried it when I was young and innocent and my pa tients lost no time changing doc tors. They wanted a doctor who pronounced the trouble a "mur mur" or "a bad cold" right off the bat. Seriously, when It comes to the question of heart trouble, it is downright cruel to inflict on a patient the Idea thnt he is "in bad shape" just because the doc tor heard or imagines he heard a "murmur." This man closes his doleful letter by saying: "I have never been to a doc tor since I'm afraid of what he may tell mo." Is thnt sensible? If the man doesn't go to a doctor he will go on nursing his "murmur" Indefi nitely. On the other hand, if he consults a doctor there is at least a fair chance he will learn thnt there's nothing the mntter, after all. In. some instances, notwith standing the old saying, no news is not good news. Shakespeare Group Takes First Steps Toward New Seats Ashland The first step to ward completely new seating fa cilities in the Shakespearean fes tival theater In Ashland was taken Saturday afternoon, when lumber donated by John Cotton, past president of the association, was moved into the festival grounds. Ralph Burgess, a member of the festival's building commit tee, said that work on the new seats would start immediately. Four hundred two-seat benches will be constructed for use in the outdoor theater this year, Burgess said, giving ' patrons more comfortable seats and in creasing seating capacity at the same time. Most of the seats will go into the reserved section and the others will be used for over flow crowds. The new seat was designed and built by Burgess and Dr. B. A. Cope, and approved by the board of directors last winter, after the board found it impos sible to buy practical and com fortable scats for the theater. It is understood that the new benches will be assembled on the grounds by members of the Ashland Rotary club and other volunteer helpers after the pieces have been cut. Seating has always been a ma jor problem at the festival, and while board members are confi dent that the new facilities will help a great deal, they aren't certain that the problem has been completely solved. The closing performance of the fes tival in 1051 played to 850 per sons and a large number were turned away. With a program of very popular plays and the new music program this year, the board again expects overflow houses. Song Is Born It is extremely Interesting to not the unusual number of song ideas inspired by passing re marks. Lee Dempsey, of Los An geles, is a former umpire. His wife Evelyn is a songwriter. At a party Lee was asked by a baseball enthusiast if after mak ing a bad decision he ever tried to even it up by giving the suf ferers a break on another de cision. "Never," said Lee. "Two wrongs don't make a right." Mrs. Dempsey cried out: "That's an idea for a song title." So in col laboration with Sammy Kahn she wrote a song titled "Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right." The song, recently launched, is doing fine. Unusual legislation If a Californian lives on a street used for public transpor tation, i.e. bus. or street car, he can legally compel the vehicles to stop for him in front of his house instead of having to go to tne trouble of walking to the corner. That's what Dick Hyland, student of , unusual legislation, claims. So, if you are a Cali fornian situated like that, try to get the bus or street car to stop in ironi oi your nouse, and see what happens. Then if it doesn't stop, consult your lawyer. If your lawyer says the vehicle docs not have to stop according to law, men you tell Dick Hy land I said he owes you a stogie. Patting By Jake Ehrlich. Brilliant leeal light from San Francisco. The most beautiful and impressive of these known men on Broadway. He was a critic of popular songs for a New York newspaper. Ran a column of song reviews. How ever, that was just a side issue. He was a prolific composer.
