You need, however, gold plated undershorts before you can wangle a fitting of the English-style clothes at this plushy Beverly Hills shop. Price tags on men's slacks never slip below $100. You can't get a suit under $275 and you pay $1,000 for a suit made of expensive Vicuna. Well-Heeled Customers Thus his fashion-plate custom ers include such well-heeled vete rans as Clark Gable, Bob Mont gomery, Bill Powell, Fred As taire, Adolph Menjou, Jack Benny plus those oil men from Texas. And younger budget-keeping idols like Tony Curtis and Far ley Granger? "Oh, they buy a suit here and there," shrugs Eddie Schmidt Jr., who supervises the business his late father founded in 1888. "It isn't like the old days when young stars stood in line to buy clothes. These days the Texans fill the line. Schmidt allowed me to finger surance company agency, he re ported today. He succeeds the late Ray Wright as agent for the company. Safford, who has lived In Grants Pass for seven years, was agent for the same company in that city. He is well-known in Medford, having been a frequent visitor here, and was director of entertainment at Camp White during World War II. He has established his office at 218 South Central avenue, in the location formerly occupied! by the Maass real estate agency. Safford and his wife will make their home here at 38 North Oakdale avenue. He has been active in civic affairs in Grants Pass, and is a member of the Elks club, the Ac tive club and the American Legion. The jacket just the jacket cost S400. The Texan ordered the stvle in 19 different colors. Schmidt has been responsible for keeping Menjou on the best- dressed lists all these years. Charlie Chaplin imported Men jou to Movietown in 1925 and hustled him right over to Schmidt's. Risk Paid Off "Menjou said he had no money and asked if we'd take a chance and give him six suits on the cuff so he could get acting jobs," the tailor says. Since then Menjou has bought more than $100,000 worth of clothes at Schmidt's. In the mid 308, Menjou gained a few pounds and had to give 300 of his suits jway. Within the next two years, he bought another 200 larger size models from Schmidt's Customer Reorders But even the dapper actor can't top the Texan who dropped into the shop last year with an $11, 000 order. This year the oil man gained 15 pounds. He imme diately flew into town to order another $15,000 worth of sar torial splendor. "But he wears them with cowboy bopts, a dia mond tie stickpin and cigars in his pocket," shudders Schmidt. "That's like a Cadillac body with a model-T motor. We now make it imperative for our cus tomers to follow our advice for their accessories." Following the dinner, C. L. Williams, a re tired postoffice department em ployee, gave a summary of the federal budget expenditures for 1953. He declared that people should know more about the workings of the federal govern ment; more should be taught about it in the schols. He added that he believed more responsi bility should be in local govern ment and not so much in Wash ington. Following the dinner and ad dress Grange opened in regular form with Pomona Master Herb Carlton and R. A. James, master of Sams Valley Grange, present ed to the master's station. Ways and means committee announced a square dance for April 26. Ladies to bring sand wiches. HEC chairman, Kay Kittle- well, announced the next HEC meeting would be held at Gla dys Ragsdale's on April 30 at 1 p.m. The rugs displayed on her desk were made by Goldie Chamberlain on her loom.
