Around Hollywood
! Hollywood (U.R) Middle
aged movie stars can boast of
more sex ap
peal than the
younger pro
files because
the oldsters
have enough
cash to be
clothes horses,
their tailor de
cided Friday.
And that goes
for Texans, too,
Aline Mosby he added.
Eddie Schmidt, who bills him
self as the world's most expen
sive tailor, is a purveyor of
swank custom-made clothes that
add glamour to the lucky buyers.
You need, however, gold
plated undershorts before you
can wangle a fitting of the English-style
clothes at this plushy
Beverly Hills shop. Price tags on
men's slacks never slip below
$100. You can't get a suit under
$275 and you pay $1,000 for a
suit made of expensive Vicuna.
Well-Heeled Customers
Thus his fashion-plate custom
ers include such well-heeled vete
rans as Clark Gable, Bob Mont
gomery, Bill Powell, Fred As
taire, Adolph Menjou, Jack
Benny plus those oil men from
Texas.
And younger budget-keeping
idols like Tony Curtis and Far
ley Granger?
"Oh, they buy a suit here and
there," shrugs Eddie Schmidt Jr.,
who supervises the business his
late father founded in 1888. "It
isn't like the old days when
young stars stood in line to buy
clothes. These days the Texans
fill the line.
Schmidt allowed me to finger
surance company agency, he re
ported today. He succeeds the
late Ray Wright as agent for the
company.
Safford, who has lived In
Grants Pass for seven years, was
agent for the same company in
that city. He is well-known in
Medford, having been a frequent
visitor here, and was director of
entertainment at Camp White
during World War II.
He has established his office
at 218 South Central avenue, in
the location formerly occupied!
by the Maass real estate agency.
Safford and his wife will make
their home here at 38 North
Oakdale avenue.
He has been active in civic
affairs in Grants Pass, and is a
member of the Elks club, the Ac
tive club and the American
Legion.

Schmidt has been responsible
for keeping Menjou on the best-
dressed lists all these years.
Charlie Chaplin imported Men
jou to Movietown in 1925 and
hustled him right over to
Schmidt's.
Risk Paid Off
"Menjou said he had no money
and asked if we'd take a chance
and give him six suits on the
cuff so he could get acting jobs,"
the tailor says.
Since then Menjou has bought
more than $100,000 worth of
clothes at Schmidt's. In the mid
308, Menjou gained a few pounds
and had to give 300 of his suits
jway. Within the next two years,
he bought another 200 larger

another $15,000 worth of sar

them with cowboy bopts, a dia

"That's like a Cadillac body

make it imperative for our cus
