CaL WHO DOES UNDER I suffer from more or less fre quent attacks of gout, wjaich I understand is one form of arth ritis. (Signed.) Then, sir, you should be tell ing me, not asking me, about gout, for I don't under stand it any more than I do chronic arthri tis, rabies or Dr. Brad pyorrhea. The en tire concept of gout as a malady due to uric acid was based on circumstantial evidence which was good enough for the doctors of the 19th century. The final and clinching proof that the trouble called gout was due to the deposit of uric acid in the af . fected tissues. In some instances such deposits formed actual lumps called "tophi" or "chalk stones" under the skin about the joint or in the rim of the ear or elsewhere. But such evidence doesn't prove anything, after all, for many individuals who have such tophi (chalk-like masses of mono-sodium urate) haven't now and never have had anything answering the classical descrip tion of gout in old time medical textbooks. There is a certain amount of uric acid present in the blood of a healthy person. In various cir cumstances the amount may be greater or less-than normal, so it is hardly scientific to associate acid content of the blood with "gout." - Old timers chose to attribute "gout" to high living, too much "red meat," too much beer, wine or liquor, and (easy with this) laziness, sedentary habit, lack of " daily exercise. ' m The plain truth is that such slight variations in the amount of uric acid present in various circumstances indicate only the alterations of metabolism, -the oxidation process, which natural- - ly occur in various circumstances ECZEHA ITCH Got you down? Try GGDHQG. OINTMENT For long-losting rtlif STAND THE GOUT? and cannot be regarded as the cause of a malady without re jection of the elementary prin ciples of physiology. In the 19th century when the great doctor pronounced the diagnosis, it was absolute and final, for there "was no available method of measur ing the uric acid content of the blood. Precise determination of the blood uric acid level is com paratively simple today and so only a bold holdover from the 19th centur ventures to diagnose gout in our time. That's why the phantom mal ady is so rare nowadays. If over eating, excessive consumption of beer, wine and liquor and sed entary habit or insufficient daily exercise were the cause or a pre disposing cause of gout, as the old timers believed, it should be as common as luxuries pur chased on the installment plan. ELIZABETH HTJRLOCX BOT SLAPS, ABUSES GIRL, IS NOT LIKELY TO CHANCE The way a boy treats a girl be fore marriage is usually pre view of what is in store for her after marriage. A leopard never changes his spots. And when a boy mistreats a girl before they are married, what reason has she to expect a magical trans formation afterward? This is why the girl who wrote the fol lowing letter should watch her step: (Q) "Mr problem Is about a boy. He is the same age as L 19 years. We've gone with each other for three years. About two months age. be started going with another girL Yat be doesn't approve of mj dating other boys. It seems to be Jealousy. When 1m around him. he slaps me. swears, and blames me for tell ing his girls things I don't even know about. Do you think he still likes me or does he despise me?" T.G. (A) Whether this boy still likes you or not should not concern you. The sooner you leave him. the better off you will be What right does he think he has to behave as he does to you? And how can you possibly like a boy who mistreats you as he does? He may have charm, many Dr. Hurlock worthy traits and all that, but he acts like a boor.If he wants to win and hold the attention of any girl, he must learn that they will not put up with such treat ment. It is possible that he is jealous when you go out with someone else. But he goes out with other girls so why shouldn't you feel free? It is none of his affair un less he has asked you to marry him and you have consented. Don't Waste More Time Don't be foolish and waste any more time on him. He has given you a preview of what marriage to him would be like. Take the warning and, steer clear of him in the future.' Cultivate men who know how to behave properly and who would never think of laying a hand on a girl in anger or swearing in her presence. It looks as if this boy is losing interest in you already. If he were seriously interested in you, he would not date other girls. That should make it easy for both of you to break up. Let him mistreat other girls if they will stand for it, but don't be his vic tim any longer. If you have a personal prob lem, write Elisabeth Hurlock in care of this newspaper. ML 4-7 Science at Work New York UJ3 The Amer ican Cancer Society hopes to get to the bottom of whether smoking causes lung cancer. It may be several years, but the ACS may turn up with a scientific answer. The conclus ion, yes or no, will be based on reports of a survey of more than 100,000 American men between the ages of 50 and 69. The survey, now being under taken, is the largest and most comprehensive ever taken of the smoking habits of the American male. It will be conducted by volunteers of the society, who will put the questions to rela tives, neighbors and close friends. A follow-up survey will be made at the end of one and two-year periods to discover whether the persons quizzed have died or are still living. Navy May Redesign Big Supercarrier Washington U The Navy has disclosed that it may rede sign its 60.000-ton supercarrier, the USS Forrestal, to include a radically new plane launching device developed in Britain. Some U.S. experts believe the British discovery will make it possible to streamline the mas sive flight deck of the Forrestal, now being built at Newport News, Va. Original plans called for the giant flat-top to have four cata pults and three separate launch ing areas. This would make it possible to catapult four fighters into the air at the same time or to launch two fighters and . a Navy bomber at about the same time. Receipts from the nation's for ests during the 1951 fiscal year reached a high of $56 million, 67 per cent over 1950. About 90 per cent of this was from the sale of 4 billion board feet of timber.
