WILLIAM BRADY, M.D. Readers should address Inquiries to: Williasa Brady, 265 El Camino, Beverly Hills, CaL GROWING PAINS. EH? Sons aged 10 and 5 years com plain of aching legs, especially in the night The 10-year-old Wf seems to be Dr. Brady "outgrow i n g" it, his mama says, but the trouble is get ting worse in the live-year-old. So she would like to know whether she can do any thing to pre vent similar trouble when her one-year-old reaches that stage of growth. Notice how prominent the growth idea is in the mother's concept of the complaint. You see, this mother belongs to the human race, particularly the American division of it. Do "growing pains" occur in other parts of the world? Now that's another I didn't investi gate in Tristan da Cunha, but from what I saw there and learn ed in talking with the inhab itants I'm confident they grow painlessly there. For that matter children grow painlessly here. . It is an easy out for parents or guardians to neglect proper treatment by at tributing a child's complaint of ache or pain in the legs at night to "growing" but it is hardly excusable. Not only uninformed parents but too often physicians dismiss such ache or pain as trivial, es pecially physicians who still fol low 19th- century principles. Sometimes, too, physicians re gard such ache or pain as "rheu matic" and mumble in their beards about the child's tenden cy to develop rheumatic fever (acute articular rheumatism, acute infectious arthritis) event ually. On what evidence the old timers reach this conclusion is beyond my low comprehension. It is my opinion that these pains in children and the painful cramps in the feet and legs which mature adults get at night are manifestations of tetany, and the nutrition authorities now generally agree that tetany is due to calcium and vitamin D deficiency. The diet of most of us is more likely to be deficient in calcium than in any other element, for two reasons: First, they do not consume enough milk, cheese, eggs, peas, beans, nuts, peanuts and green leafy vegetables these are the best food sources of calcium; second, they do not enjoy enough exposure of naked body to sunlight or diffuse day light to the normal production of vitamin D in the body vita min D is essential for the util ization of calcium. This applies particularly to growing children who are per mitted to feed on cheat-food and to mature adults who lor vari ous reasons try to live on re fined, "digestible," vitamin-poor and mineral-poor foods. I re frain from naming these reasons, for, after all, I don't want to make you poor old geezers mad, I just want to warn the young er ones before they have lost most of their teeth. The purpose of this column is to educate, not to dish out sympathy. On written request (a clipping will not do) I'll send the pam phlet Adult Tetany and Growing Pains to anyone who provides stamped, self-addressed envel ope. - QUESTIONS ANSWERS . . A TEASE RETREATS FAST (Q) "Soma ysars ago, I met a young couple through a mutual friend and liked them very much. Within the last two years, the husband has started ribbing me about my age. I am seven years my husband's senior. He says such things as, 'You're get ting old or 'It's old age creep ing up on you.' This happens each time I visit them. The other evening, when I stopped there to meet his wife, he said to me, 'Hello, how's your young hus band?' I tried to laugh it off as usual but really I felt embar rassed. I don't want to break off my friendship with his wife. Please advise me." (A) Of course you shouldn't break a friendship that has meant much to you because of a little ribbing. But, at the same time, you do not want to put yourself in a position where you will be embar rassed or an noyed every time you see them. You must know your friend well enough by now so you can have a heart to heart talk with her and ex plain that her husband's ribbing gets under your skin. She can stop the ribbing or she can see that her husband is not around when you are there. Because you yourself are sen sitive about your age difference, you react more to his ribbing than you otherwise would. And, he can quickly sense this. It is his way of trying to be funny, but you do not see the humor of the joke. Try, for your own peace of mind, to forget about it. After all, if your marriage is happy, what difference does it make if you are seven years older than he? You have the consolation of knowing that your chances of widowhood are far less than Hs3 r aasTs! Dr. Hurlock stopped eating-, but it is no relief . . . (W. van der A) Answer Don't fool around another day consult a physician. Rare Combination My husband is diabetic, takes insul in, and has had bronchial asthma for years . . . (Mrs. P. L.) Answer That is such a rare com bination of conditions that I suspect the diagnosis of asthma is wrong. Bet ter leave the treatment, diet and other questions to the judgment of your husband's phvsician. How to TeU Your Child Daughter, nine, whom I love very much. Return Remarks Try tossing back to this man remarks that will embarrass him as he embarrasses you. By now, you should know his sensitive points. Play on them as he has played on yours. If, for example he is getting bald or developing a "bay win dow," remind him of these signs of age creeping on him. People who like to tease, you will dis cover, hate to be teased. VgteaMr- 0 Mart Cvetic, real life hero, discusses a script with screen and radio star, Dana Andrews, who will portray Matt in thrilling program starting tonight. .. . Violence reared its bloody head at one of the nation's largest industrial plants when Red elements instigated a riot there. Almost 200 men in vaded buildings, swinging clubs and smashing machinery. The melee that ensued resulted in four deaths and 39 injured, with five men listed in serious condition. The 9.000 residents of this northern Oklahoma city know they won't solve the problems of the world by themselves. They think a little prayer in the middle of the day will help, however.
