trouble is get
ting worse in
the live-year-old.
So she
would like to
know whether
she can do any
thing to pre
vent similar
trouble when her one-year-old
reaches that stage of growth.
Notice how prominent the
growth idea is in the mother's
concept of the complaint.
You see, this mother belongs to
the human race, particularly
the American division of it.
Do "growing pains" occur in
other parts of the world? Now
that's another I didn't investi
gate in Tristan da Cunha, but
from what I saw there and learn
ed in talking with the inhab
itants I'm confident they grow
painlessly there.
For that matter children grow
painlessly here. . It is an easy
out for parents or guardians to
neglect proper treatment by at
tributing a child's complaint of
ache or pain in the legs at night
to "growing" but it is hardly
excusable.
Not only uninformed parents
but too often physicians dismiss
such ache or pain as trivial, es
pecially physicians who still fol
low 19th- century principles.
Sometimes, too, physicians re
gard such ache or pain as "rheu
matic" and mumble in their
beards about the child's tenden
cy to develop rheumatic fever
(acute articular rheumatism,
acute infectious arthritis) event
ually. On what evidence the old
timers reach this conclusion is
beyond my low comprehension.
It is my opinion that these
pains in children and the painful
cramps in the feet and legs
which mature adults get at night
are manifestations of tetany,
and the nutrition authorities now
generally agree that tetany is
due to calcium and vitamin D
deficiency.
The diet of most of us is more
likely to be deficient in calcium
than in any other element, for
two reasons: First, they do not
consume enough milk, cheese,
eggs, peas, beans, nuts, peanuts
and green leafy vegetables
these are the best food sources
of calcium; second, they do not
enjoy enough exposure of naked
body to sunlight or diffuse day
light to the normal production
of vitamin D in the body vita
min D is essential for the util
ization of calcium.
This applies particularly to
growing children who are per
mitted to feed on cheat-food and
to mature adults who lor vari
ous reasons try to live on re
fined, "digestible," vitamin-poor
and mineral-poor foods. I re
frain from naming these reasons,
for, after all, I don't want to
make you poor old geezers mad,
I just want to warn the young
er ones before they have lost
most of their teeth. The purpose
of this column is to educate, not
to dish out sympathy.

a little ribbing.
But, at the
same time, you
do not want to
put yourself
in a position
where you
will be embar
rassed or an
noyed every
time you see
them.
You must
know your friend well enough
by now so you can have a heart
to heart talk with her and ex
plain that her husband's ribbing
gets under your skin. She can
stop the ribbing or she can see
that her husband is not around
when you are there.
Because you yourself are sen
sitive about your age difference,
you react more to his ribbing
than you otherwise would. And,
he can quickly sense this. It is
his way of trying to be funny,
but you do not see the humor
of the joke.
Try, for your own peace of
mind, to forget about it. After
all, if your marriage is happy,
what difference does it make if
you are seven years older than
he? You have the consolation of
knowing that your chances of
widowhood are far less than
