Med ford Man Making 'Important, Difficult' African Land Survey A Medford man, Donald L.j Higgins, is one of two surveyors who are Conducting "one of the most important and difficult sur vey projects in the world," ac cording to a United Press story from Kampala, Uganda, Africa. Higgins and Philip E. Hoff man, Baltimore, are surveying the "last link in the chain" which will give the accurate length of the African continent. Higgins. who is 31, left in Jan uary for the Uganda assignment. He is chief cartographic engineer for the surveying party, accord ing to his family. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Higgins, 60 North Peach street, and is a 1938 graduate of the Medford high school. During high school years he was interested in ama teur geology and prospecting, they said. Army Schooling Cited . He feels bis army schooling is directly responsible for the surveying and engineering work, according to a brother, He spent seven years in the army's corps of engineers as a technical sergeant, serving in the Euro pean theater during World War II. He received a British decor ation for his work in surveying on the English channel, his fam ily said. Higgins is a member of the American Military Engi neers society. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, he joined the United States Geological Survey, and has worked for the govern ment since. Before leaving for Africa he was in the Kodiak islands off Alaska, and at the atomic bomb research site at Al magordo, N.M. He is unmar ried. New Information The United Press story from Uganda said that figures result ing from the Africa survey which is to measure a 650-mile "gap" running through moun tains, bush and swamplands in the heart of the Dark Continent's big game area will enable all areas to organize their land measurement under a single sys tem. It will also give new infor mation on the size and shape of the entire world, the story said. The decision of the United States government to undertake the project was made at the meet ing in Brussels last July of the am . American help was asked because of the urgent nature of the work and the great difficulties to be' overcome. Survey Delayed Higgins and Hoffman are. now reconnoitering the line of the survey, which runs along the 30th meridian of longitude. Their reconnaissance, for which the United States has voted $75, 000, should be ended by mid April, but the actual survey can not start before September. During the present season the atmosphere over northern Ugan da, where the survey will begin, is hazy with the smoke of bush fires, and no sighting is possible. Later, the UP story said, the rains will make movement in the papyrus-covered swamplands vir tually impossible. Revival Services Planned at Ruch The Rev. C. W. Frost, pastor of the Apostolic Faith church here, announced today that he will open revival services Thurs day night at the old store build ing at Ruch. A special concert by the mu sicians of the local church will open the series of meetings. Some of the selections included in the program will be "The Heavens Are Telling," orchestra; Medley of Negro spirituals by the male quartet; "The Beauti ful Garden of Prayer," violin solo; and "God Is a Spirit," chorus accompanied by the or chestra. Services will be held Thurs day and Friday this week and Monday through Friday next week at 8 p. m. There will be no collections nor admission charge and everyone is welcome to attend. FAMILY GOES FOR MINISTRY Hamilton, Tex. (U.R) Four members of the R. C. Tennison family are ordained ministers, and three more plan to enter the field. The father and three sons are Baptist ministers. Two more sons and a daughter plan to be come ministers. 9 ONLYj EM - i u MEDFORD L ; Phoenix Firemen Plan Annual Dance St. Patrick's Day Phoenix Phoenix Volunteer firemen will hold their annual open house and St. Patrick's day dance Sunday and Monday, March 16 and 17. The open house will be held Sunday at the fire hall when the department's new fire truck will be on display, and a factory representative will be there to explain performance of the new equipment, firemen said. The dance will be held Mon day evening. St. Patrick's day, in the Phoenix Community hall. The public is invited to both events. "Sonny's" orchestra of Gold Hill will furnish dance music. Dances Held The first annual dance was held in 1950 and netted about $200. The 1951 dance brought about $100, and all dance pro ceeds have been used to pur chase fire department equip ment, including coats, smoke masks, hose nozzles, lights, hose and ladder racks, as well as to rebuild the present fire truck and enlarge and improve the fire hall, members stated. All labor has been done by members of the fire department. The first motorized fire en gine purchased by Phoenix was in 1929. In 1944 the fire depart ment was reorganized and of its original members, the present chief, Lovell Robins, and his as sistant chief, Ed Caldwell, are the only ones still active. The second engine was purchased in 1947 and is still in use. In December, 1950, a Phoenix Fire men's association was formed to sponsor social activities. REDBIRD GETS TOUGH Memphis, Tenn.
