Colorado Vacation

Margaret Truman is scheduled
to spend a vacation here during
Holy Week, April 7-12.
Alter her vacation, Miss Tru
man has scheduled three con
certs in the Rocky Mountain
area.
Her first concert will be in
Denver, April 14: Pueblo, April
16; and Laramie, Wyo., April 18.
The president's daughter is
expected to take the week's
break in her concert tour to
spend a week at the "Trianon"
estate of millionaire art patron
Blevins Davis, a family friend.
Mother of 14 Given 15-Day Jail Sentence
Spokane (U.R) Mrs. Sadie
Older, mother of 14, Wednesday
faced 15 days in the city jail and
two years on probation for de
frauding the state of $159 in
welfare funds.
Judge Raymond F. Kelly,
who last week delayed sentenc
ing of Mrs. Older because he
"did not know what to do about
it," passed sentence 6 Tuesday.
Mrs. Older, who has six children
living at home, pleaded guilty to
a charge of grand larceny in ob
taining aid to dependent - chil
dren funds while failing to re
port to welfare officers that she
had remarried.
Judge Kelly said he feared
Mrs. Older's youngest children
would be the "real victims", of
a prison term, but that the law
"can't be stopped in its tracks."
Mark Twain observed that
when a man goes out to buy a
collar, he comes back with , a
collar and maybe a tie he didn't
mean to buy, but when he sends
his wife, she comes back with
a bottle of face lotion, four yards
of dress goods, some silk stock
ings, linoleum for the kitchen
floor and forgets the collar.
A " national survey showed
nearly 84 per cent of motorists
involved in traffic accidents
were driving straight ahead just
before the impact.

Home Economics club of Roxy
Ann Grange met March 5 at the
home of Mrs. Lewis Bish with
18 members present including
one new member, Mrs. Mike
Castner. The piggy prize was
won by Mrs. Don Meadows.
Mrs. Qrrie More will keep the
scrapbook this year, molding it
into the history of our Grange.
Plans for the annual plant and
food sale to be held at Grange
hall March 27, are off to a great
start. Mrs. Ivan Wolfe is chair
man for plants; Mrs. Leslie Shaw
is chairman for foods. Mrs.
Kenneth Shaw is chairman for
the luncheon to be served during
the day for convenience of the
public. The sale is open to the
public. -
Six of the ladies turned in
their dollar and told how they
earned it, ranging from baby
siting to gathering eggs.
Central Point Grange
Central Point Grange met
February 7 with all officers
present. Carl Dobrot was given
third and fourth degrees.
Eleven past masters took part
in the program during lecture
hour.
Mrs. Catey presented the
grange with a lovely crocheted
altar cloth which she made her
self. The Cateys recently cele
brated their 99th wedding anniversary.
Lecturer Shirley Bohnert an
nounced that W. B. Tucker,
county agent, will talk on
"grasses" at the next meeting.
March 21.
Plans were discussed for the
square dance and canasta party
for Friday night, March 14.
Ladies are to bring sandwiches.
All Grangers and their friends
are cordially invited.

The social evening at Live
Oak Grange was held March 8
A large gathering of Grangers
and friends enjoying a special
program prepared by Lecturer,
Mrs. Glen Black. Juanita Mac-
Donald, of Grants Pass, formerly
ii Hawaii, delighted the group
vith native dances. Mr. and Mrs.
3udy Sieger sang a duet ac
companied by Mrs. Paul Hughes
at the piano. C. W. Babb, Loyd
Smith and Mrs. Karl Christen
sen furnished music for square
dancing.
Refreshments were served by
Mrs. Harry Rose, Mrs. Robert
Hoover, Mrs. Philip Strahan and
Mrs.- Harry Nelson.
Live Oak Grange will meet in
regular session Thursday, March
13, at 7:30 pjn., and a large at
tendance is urged. Initiation in
third and fourth degree will be
put on in full form by the team,
Live Oak Grange is expecting
a good turnout for the baked ham
dinner to be served Saturday,
March 15. from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Motion pictures will be shown
by Carlos Morris, through cour
tesy of Conger-Morns of Med-
ford.

clude the evening entertainment.

Being Landlord Expensive
Business, State Discovers
Salem (U.R) The state
of Oregon is finding that being
a landlord isn't the profitable
enterprise some seem to think.
One of the houses, on Marion
street, it bought against the time
when it would need the property
for the capitol zone, caught fire
recently when a faculty furnace
backfired. The house didn't burn
down but the state had to give
$300 from its restoration fund
to clean the entire house of soot

Gov. Douglas McKay ex
pressed a doubt that it was prof
itable for the state to be in the
landlord business. The other
board members, State Treasurer
Walter J. Pearson and Secretary
of State Earl T. Newbry, agreed.

was drawing $70 a month rent,
and it would be 15 or 20 years
before the state needs the prop-

The board approved an agree
ment worked out with Dr. Mar
vin M. Lacy of Portland under
which he will spend one day at
the Oregon Tuberculosis hos
pital here and one day at the
Eastern Oregon State Tubercu
losis hospital at The Dalles each
week and will be paid $300 a
month by each institution. Dr.
Lacy will do all of the thoraic
surgery, pulmonary resections,
thoracoplasties, pneumonolysis
and bronchoscopies at the hos
pital here and at The Dalles he
will do special surgery when
advisable.

Marshall Tito says he will
never permit Archbishop Alois
Stepinac to resume his position
as Roman Catholic Primate of
Yugoslavia. .
Although released from pris
on four months ago, Stepinac is
not permitted to leave his home
town and is referred to by the
government as "the former
Archbishop."
Tito made his statement in an
swering questions during a two
hour interview with 41 Ameri
can editors, pubishers and broad
casters Tuesday at his official
residence.
