The Black Tornado, which posted a brilliant 33 to 52 vic tory over Klamath Falls Satur day night to gain back sole Big Four leadership, tangles with Grants Pass next Friday and Saturday in the final frays of the regular conference season. Both games fall in the "must win" category for Medford. Klamath Falls, one-game behind the Tornado, is almost certain to take both its battles with door mat Ashland. If it does and Med ford loses one contest, the Pels and Tornado would be deadlock ed again, necessitating a play off. If Medford should lose both tussles with the Cavemen, Klam ath would gain the crown. ; ' Dennis Conner, with the tying field goal and game-winning free toss, was the clutch player for Medford on Saturday, but the triumph was essentially a team victory. Team ffort by a quint that just wouldn't give up brought the Tornado back from the brink of defeat. Medford, hurt by the loss of Ed Bingham, its backboard clearing ace, on fouls in the third quarter, had to close nine-point deficits to become giant-killers of the taller Pels. Conner tied up the hassle and potted the winning marker in a hectic final two minutes-that had screaming spectators on . their feet Ray Bell had two free shot chances that might have meant Klamath victory. There was some opinion that he missed them purposely to give big Balph Carroll tip-in tries. But, if that was the intent, the gam ble failed to pay off. . The only thing remaining , to be settled in the competition was third place In the hockey com petition. Sweden and Czecho slovakia, which tied for that spot with identical records of six wins and two defeats, were scheduled to meet in a playoff game. The other game matched also- rans Poland and Germany. . European Title Since the European champion ship was blended with the Olym pic hockey tournament, the win ner of the Swedish-Czech game will also win the European title. Canada won the hockey crown with seven victories and a tie, and the U. S. was second with six wins; one loss, and a tie. The showing in hockey was typical of the fine performance by U. S. athletes in the games here. The star-spangled athletes ran up a total of 89 li points to take -second place in the unof ficial team competition behind Norway's 125. Not So Strong Though the U. S. won the winter Olympic title in the 1932 games at Lake Placid, N. Y that showing is not rated nearly as strong as the Yanks, deeds here during the past week, because few European nations were able to send full teams in 1932. All told, the Americans won four gold medals the greatest number they have ever won In an Olympics held outside the U.' S., topping the three they won in 1948. . Mrs. Andrea Mead Lawrence, the 19-year-old, dark-haired ski daredevil from Rutland, Vt emerged the top IT. S. star with two first places, in the ladies giant slalom race and the regular slalom. But her brilliance was only slightly greater than that of Dick Button of Englewood, N. J., peerless master of the blades who successfully defend ed bis figure skating title, and Willamette Cops Bunting By UNITED PRESS Willamette university won the 1992 Northwest conference bas ketball championship by defeat ing Linfield college 91-72 at McMinnville Saturday night. This Is the fourth consecu tive year that Johnny Lewis' Bearcats have earned a share of the Northwest crown. They were co-champions last year with Linfield. Pioneers Win Elsewhere in the conference, second-place Lewis and Clark whipped Whitman 65-51 at Walla Walla while College of Idaho, at the tail end of the conference standings, won its fourth league game by beating Pacific 71-56 at Caldwell. Big Ted Loder and Doug Logue engineered the Willam ette victory. Loder dropped in 24 points and Logue hit 22. Bil ly Anderson led Linfield with 19. SEALS TRADE LAKE San Francisco (U.PJ Eddie Lake, believed to have been the highest paid baseball player with the San Francisco Seals last sea son, has been traded to Oakland in a one-for-two- players swap between the two Pacific Coast league teams. .
