Pill; Smaller Than Aspirin Tablet, Gives Hope in Tuberculosis Editor's not: What may be on of the great mileatonea In medical science hu juit been reached the dicovery of a drug that apparently wagea a tucceaaful battle against the tuberculosis germ. Encouraging tests have been made on patients in New York state, some of whom were la what used to be regarded as a hopeless condition. The United . . , " Press Science Editor has written six dispatches en the mo mentous discovery, including the "detective story" on how a team of scientists perfected the new drug. Here is the first dispatch. By PAUL F. ELLIS United Press Science Editor New York U.R) Man at long last seems to be on the threshold of victory over an insidious disease that has plagued him since pre historic times. A white pill, smaller than an aspirin tablet, has giv en hope to the hopeless. The disease is tuberculosis. It has killed or laid low more hu- man beings than any other. It still is killing Americans at a rate of 50,000 a year and the toll in many foreign lands is much greater. The cost of the disease to society through the centuries is so great as to be inestimable. Progress in 20 Years Since the days of Hippocrates medical science has been seek ing to rid man of the TB killer. The greatest progress has come in the last 20 years But the tuberculosis bug a rod-shaped germ is a sturdy and tough organism. The many "wonder. drugs" that have come' along since the first sulfa have not done much to knock out the killer. The nearest thing to a successful anti-TB drug was streptomycin, but that was not the answer. Bed rest and surgery still were the old standbys. Until now. . ' Two Synthetics . Today, medical science has two synthetics one known as marsilid and the other as rimifon or nydrazid. Marsilid is a brand new synthesis, but the compound known either as rimifon or nydra zid was snythesized from coal tar in 1912. Its power against the TB bug has just been- disco, ered. With these compounds medical science has a new weapon to fight the killer. The TB germ is no stranger. It was discovered in 1882 by Robert Koch. Tens of thousands of scientists since that time have watched that killer at work. They have photographed him. They have given him the official name of mycobaterium tuberculosis. Germ Causes Lesions The germ causes a wide variety of lesions and clinical symp toms. That made it difficult for the early medical men tc track down the cause of the disease, or recognize it. Today, diagnosis is a simple matter. The doctors use a skin test for screening purposes. They use x-rays of the crest and mi croscopic investigation of sputum to confirm a diagnosis. ; The disease may attack any part of the body, although tuber culosis of the lung is the most common and causes the most deaths. Two type's miliary fast spreading and tuberculosis meningitis have a rapid progress toward death. They are the toughest to stop. A certain natural immunity is reported in some human beings and there have been studies with a vaccine known as B.C.G. The initials stand for bacillus calmetteguerin. Long used in Europe, it has been tried only in recent years in the United States area where there is unusually high prevalence of the disease. The value of the vaccination still is in controversy between two schools of medical thought. Disease Ranks Seventh Despite the progress and a great reduction in deaths from tuberculosis, the disease still ranks seventh as the cause of death in the United States. It leads the list of death causes in the IS to 45 age group. , The social and economic aspects are far more serious than is commonly known. The decline in the number of cases has not come down in the same ratio as the reducing death rate. Even at that the United States is fortunate. Tuberculosis death rates in the Orient, Africa and in Central and South America are extremely high and increasing. . 5 ' To score a real victory against' mycobaterium tuberculosis sci ence needed a drug that actually sets the germ back on its heels; knocks it dead quickly and at a cheap price, s Preliminary trials indicate that science may have that drug now. The near future will tell. The crusader is 57-year-old Acharya Vinoba Rhave, one of the late Mohandas Gandhi s most devout and trusted dis ciples., He was picked by Gandhi to be the first satyagrahi (de votee of non-violent non-cooper ation) in the countrywide civil disobedience movement staged against the British in the '30s. (U.PJ A new drug to fight tuber culosis has been administered patients of the Weimar Joint Sanitarium for the past two weeks and already has produced "better feeling of well being" in 25 patients, the hospital su perintendent has reported. Dr. Mildred Z. Tboren said that as far as she could deter mine the Weimar sanitarium was the only Institution in the West which had begun tests with the new chemical, krown vari ously as nydrazid and rimifom. Too Early for Claims "It is certainly too early to make any positive claims about it," Dr. Thoren said, "but crit ical manifestations of improve ment have been more rapid than with any other treatment we have used,' including strepto mycin. "We have found no disadvan tages and we don't anticipate the development of any toxic reac tions, but it is Just too early to state facts," Dr. Thoren said. Tests in Secrecy The Weimar Joint Sanitarium, located in the high and dry at mosphere of the Sierra Nevada foothill country east of San Francisco, is supported in Its exclusive TB work by funds from IS California counties. Dr. Thoren said tests with the new drug have been conducted in such secrecy that only she and one assistant knew its true name. "Up until today we have nicknamed it W and even soaked off all the bottle labels so the nurses would not know what it was. It was our big se cret,' the doctor said. It is in this way only, Bhave feels, that there will be general economic betterment for the people of India. Bhave calls his mission "Bhoomi dan yagna" sacrifice through land gifts. Red Problem Studied The crusade idea came to Bhave while he was studying the 'Communist problem in Telen gana, Hyderabad. Communist agitators there long had in dulged in terrorism against land lords and almost had succeeded in setting up a rival government before police action broke their bid for power. Bhave then started a walking tour of Telengana. preaching his message. He then extended his walking tour to Northern India, covering 767 miles through five states, Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, Ra- jasthan and Uttar Pradesh. In 60 days he walked through 300 vil lages where landlords deeded away 20,000 acres. The target Bhave has set is to obtain from landlords voluntary contributions of 50,000.000 acres, one-fifth the total cultivable land in India. Sunday while playing at her home at 137 Tripp street, according to a report from Os teopathic hospital where she is hospitalized. She Is the daugh ter -of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Adams. According to Mrs. L. C. De Carlow, 206 Cottage street, a neighbor, who tore the burning clothing from the girl, the child had lighted newspapers while playing on the back porch of her parents' home. Her mother, according to the hospital report, was visiting at another neigh bor's at the time. The child, Mrs. DeCarlow said, ran across the alley to the DeCarlow home.
